I have JRA & have been on prednisone for about 25 years and my best advice is to discuss alternating dosages with your doctor. I changed doctors about 3 years ago and it was the best decision I made for my arthritis treatment. When I first saw her I was on 20mg/daily. She immediately changed my dosage to where I was alternating daily by taking 20mg one day and 15mg the next day. Two months later she reduced my pred. to 20mg/12.5mg & currently almost 3 years later I'm down to 12.5mg/7.5mg. This has helped alot with my moonface and overall weight gain. I was able to go from 181lbs. down to 149lbs. But please discuss this with your physician before alternating your dosage to see if it is an option for you.

I have the same fluffiness, just read it's called moon face. the only good thing I can say is I feel so much better and this is something that comes with the double-edged sword from the big P. I have decided to just accept this and the fact that it erases a lot of my 67-yr-old wrinkles I take as a plus. You have to stay positive. The reason I was put on prednisone is Polymyalgia Rhuematica and the pain was unbearable; could hardly stand or pick up a glass of water. it's good to get my life back, but of course there are concerns. I hate pharmaceuticals and live a very healthy life, but being in pain for so long, even knowing the side affects of prednisone, I am so grateful to feel better. I plan to use some cold packs before my 50th class reunion in a couple of weeks, but otherwise I'll accept my new puffy face and hope that the year on prednisone will kick the PMR's ass and I can get back to being healthy by eating right and living well. Namaste. Rose

What worked somewhat for me is that I always have a cold glass of water with lemon slices in it with me and ice cubes and I avoid everything salty.

65 milligrams sounds like way, way too much...most I have ever heard of was 40 per day...but then???????

I take 5mg a day for RA. I have for the past 3 years. I have a pretty nasty case of RA as well. The side effect to the drug suck, moon face, weight gain and all the trimmings. I have tried to go off of it very slowly several times and just ended up not being able to get out of bed. It was a mess. It is a wonder drug but a nightmare just the same. I wish I could lose the moon face. I wondered if a water pill may help but have not seen anything during my search that would indicate so :\

Water pills don't help for me. I am tapering 1mg a week. Started 15, then 12.5, then 10, then down 1 mg a week as I insisted to doctor I would not take them anymore. My swelling started 6 weeks in so was quite a shock. even though I'm tapering face is growing by the day. don't recognise myself and so depressed. Have lots of other side effects as well.
