Is it possible to develop addiction to diet pills?

Loading...

I have never heard that someone got addicted to diet pills but when I think about it, it could be! It depends on what kind of diet pills we are talking about. My husband is obese and he was prescribed Meridia diet pills by his doctor. When I read about these pills I noticed that they affect the levels of serotonin neurotransmitters in the brain to decrease the appetite. High levels of serotonin will decrease your appetite but it would also have a very good influence on your mood because this is how antidepressants work. They increase the levels of serotonin in the brain, so a person would feel better. I know this because my brother suffered from a depressive phase when he was younger and was taking these serotonin boosters. Some people say that these drugs are not addictive but they may be as they do cause withdrawal symptoms and by making you happy all the time,…..what happens when you stop taking them and experience lower levels of serotonin. This may influence on someone’s mood and in order to feel good again, they may start using them again. But then, if diet pills are abused, they may lead to other negative symptoms. This is just my way of seeing things. I don’t know if one could become addictive on over-the-counter diet pills.
