Hello! These drugs are called MAOIs, which means Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors. They are used for treating symptoms of depression such as feelings of sadness, worthlessness, or guilt; loss of interest in daily activities; changes in appetite; tiredness; sleeping too much; insomnia; and thoughts of death or suicide. They work by blocking the activity of cleaning up the monoamines (serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine) by a protein in the brain called monoamine oxidase, a liver and brain enzyme. When these neurotransmitters are not destroyed by the enzyme, they start piling up in the brain, and in that way ease the symptoms of depression that are caused by the lack of neurotransmitters.
