What is the main indication for amitriplyine? Is it antiaxiety or antidepressive drug? What are the precautions for its usage? My mother has developed certain emotional stress that leaded to psychotic disorder. How effective amitriplyine is in such conditions? Please post. Thanks.

Amytriptiline is antidepressant that may help alleviate anxiety, because of its sedative action. Precautions for amitriptilin therapy are cardiovascular disorders, hepatic dysfunction, renal impairment and history of seizures, among the others. It has side effects that can harm especially elder patients, like urine retention, arrhythmias, constipation, insomnia etc. And its effects may take up to a month to develop. Now, it’s all up to doctor’s diagnosis.
