I have been experiencing strange pain in the vulval area for over a year now. I have had all the tests done by my gynecologist and nothing wrong was found. I even switched doctors and this one seemed even more confused at the results and my persistent pain. Then I went back to my first doctor as it looked it had a bit more knowledge about my specific problem. I am 22, I have never had sex but I did masturbate but I never used any sharp or strange objects and hurt myself. It just started one day and is here to stay. MY doctor said she spoke to a colleague and they think I might have vulvodynia. She prescribed me Amitritpyline but when I read about the drug, I saw it is used for depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. I hope they don’t think it is all in my head because it hurts like crazy-for real.

I don’t think these doctors think the pain is in your head. Amitritpyline regulates the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, which in return has positive effects primarily on the mood and the other negative symptoms that lack of these neurotransmitters can cause.
The main two neurotransmitters Amitritpyline regulates are serotonin and norepinephrin and the lack of these neurotransmitters could lead besides depression and other behavior problems, to chronic pain, muscle ache, stomach disorders, insomnia, restlessness, and nervousness. Your doctor will probably watch closely your progress.
