Sotalol was an obvious factor in my recent 15-pound weight gain which I attribute to excessive sleepiness, weakness preventing good exercise, and elevation in appetite. There must be a more effective drug that does not have so many adverse side effects. Am asking my doctor if a drug with less side effects and one that will permit me to be physically active would be appropriate.

I might have an answer for you all - I have been talking with my heart specialist about this. I put on all my weight when I was on 160 mg of Sotolol twice a day.
Since then I was reduced to 80 mg twice a day.
Then 40mg in the morning and 80 mg at night...
The word from my heart specialist is that soltolol is a a demotivator. Not a depressent or a the like.
I have gone from a normal 75kg at 6ft tall to 130kg since taking sotolol. It is amazing for AF and it is my best friend. But Since taking it I cannot give a toot about things I used to be passionate about. With that in mind my highs and lows have evened out. Do I love it = Yes / Will it kill me from being over weight = yes / Do I care that the extra weight is going to kill me = Not in the slightest.
I know that sounds strange but all self preservation has gone out the window. It takes allot for me to get passionate about anything. When I went off Sotolol by accident. (id**t me) All that passion for life returned with vigor. I think that is what causes the AF and Sotolol just puts a lid on it for me...
Another side effect is frequent urination. Yes I have seen many specialists and urologists. They all scratch their head but the forums show it as a comon side effect as well for some people.

I’ve been on sotalol 80 mg 2xdaily for more than two years to treat AFIB, and have gained more than 30 pounds!! All my life I’ve been in tip-top shape, with defined six pack abs. Now I have a beer belly, and weigh 275 pounds!! It’s driving me crazy.

Yes I am on high dosage of Sotolol and have so far put on 8 kilos in a very short time. Apparently this is a known side effect of taking Sotolol. I believe there are some newer beta blockers that do not have this side effect but with me my cardiologist said that I have to stay on it. I am going to get a second opinion.

Wonder if cardiologist changed your medication. I have been on sotalol for 3 years now. Weight gain is horrible. Diet and working out make no difference. Been thin all my life until now.

I have been on Sotolol for over a year now after trying multiple medications and an ablation. The medication works, no doubt about it; however I have gained 30 pounds. I recently had my pacemaker lead changed, and asked my Dr. if we could try another medication. It has been a month, and I'm already down 20 pounds, doing nothing different, but now my Afib is back. There doesn't seem to be a happy medium.

May I ask which med your doctor put you on that resulted in your weight loss?

I am finding that I have the same problem! I am eating less and not losing weight, but gaining instead. It is worse now that I had to stop taking blood thinners because they caused an upper GI bleed and increase my dosage of sotalol! Good grief...no one wants to get fat from eating less!!! Where do you go from.
