I also just started on Aviane and my face broke out all over in my chin area (cystic type of acne) and I cry for no particular reason. My face also got really oily for no reason and I have no appetite (which actually helps with some weight loss.) I also get extremely angry at nothing. Aviane is definitely NOT the same as alesse. I am switching to a low androgen activity bc this month, hopefully yasmin or ortho tricyclen. Which do you think is better to treat cystic acne on the chin?

I started on Aviane 2 months ago and am also experiencing bizarre side effects. I lose my temper very quickly and feel angry almost all day. This is unusual behavior for as I normally have a ton of patience. My skin is TERRIBLE! I have awful breakouts and my scalp is so dry! My hands and feet get so swollen most days and I feel so tired, even after a good night's sleep. I feel bad for my husband and baby boy b/c I am not myself and am so miserable. I used to be on Cyclen, which was awesome, but my doc switched me b/c I started getting severe migraines after I had my son. The migraines are gone, but I'm thinking I'd take them over these other symptoms any day.
Thanks to all of you for your stories and input.

I just switched to Aviane about 4 months ago and since then my periods have been up to 10 days long and it starts on the last week of active pills (so not even when its supposed to). I don't know if it's just the birth control brand and I should switch to another brand or if its because the first time I took Aviane I took it about 1 week before my period and now my body is out of wack. But I've heard it should level out, but after four months and 10 days of heavy bleeding, I'm getting really cranky and frustrated. Does anyone have the same problem?

I've been on Aviane for a couple months now and I've noticed that I've become a lot more angry. I'm having terrible mood swings and my acne is acting up. Even though I know that what I'm upset about is foolish I can't shake it off. I feel like I have no control over my emotions anymore. I've also had anxiety and panic attacks (I've never had a problem with these before) and chest pains. I figured it would get better after a little while but it seems like it's getting worse. After reading all these comments I'm definitely making an appointment with my doctor.

I agree with you that you should see a doctor. It sounds like the birth control that you're taking could probably be causeing an issue for you. Can you let me know how it goes?

Does anyone know if Alesse can be taken while breastfeeding? Alesse was prescribed by my G.O. but the pharmacy directed me to Aviane stating; it is a generic form of birth-control to Alesse, less expensive and it is the same-- would be safe to take during breastfeeding.

Well turns out it is not recommended; says serious side effects to nursing infants? I had to call the pharmacy whom had to call a health centre to find more information. Apparently if you are 6months postpartum then you can start taking Levonorgestrel and ethinyl estadiol tablets (Aviane). BUT in my pamphlet nothing says this, nor does it say that a side-effect is that you will produce more milk?

I'm actually scared to continue it, my daughter is 9 months!! I planned on continuing to breastfeed her until she is over a year old-hormones do pass through the breast-milk. I took one pill this morning (recommended time-evening).

How long does it take to pass through the milk, should I stop taking it?

My instincts are telling me to STOP. But can this one pill do any harm should I pump and give her formula till this clears out of my system-however long that is?

I think that the halflife on it is 12 to 24 hours, so you should be clear in two days. Until then, it is probably not a good idea to breastfeed her. Do you have some old breast milk saved?

I have been on Aviane for 4 months now. the first month or so i had major issues - however i am an emotional and depressed individual. My husband and i were arguing more - it helped when i told him it was my body reacting to the drugs - and when I'm at work it can be really challenging to keep my cool. I did however even out after the 2nd month. then i switched from a 21 day pack to a 28 day pack and experienced some real lows and rage.
My symptoms include mood swings, constant Headaches with pain behind the eyes that worsen with stressful situations. the depression could have worsened.

I've been on Aviane for 10 days and I know it's effecting me. I always have a uneasy stomach. I get b*tchy so easily. I'll be starving and then have no appetite. I'm tired a lot as well. I started on my first day of my period, which lasted 7 days. My normal cycles are 4 or 5 days. I'm still spotting and sometimes with clots.

I thought I was done with my period on the 8th and 9th day so I had sex with my boyfriend. During, I guess he got all the blood that wasn't flowing going which wasn't a very pleasant experience. He also ejaculated in me. I later then read that the pill isn't effective until after a month. So should I worry about pregnancy?

After reading about all of the others problems with this pill I'm not sure if I still want to take it. I'm going to talk to the OB at my Planned Parenthood where I got the pills. She didn't tell me anything about these, she just prescribed them to me. I only weigh 100lbs so I guess that had something to do with her decision.

Should I be worried???
I plan on finishing the month but I'm not sure if I should stay on it afterwards.

I started aviane 2 months ago..originally to stop my periods due to heavy, abnormal bleeding. I had the depo shot for 2 months and had bad reaction so started aviane. My problem is I have had a nonstop period for three weeks straight..is this normal? Whay should I do? Any help out there or should I get a second opinion? If I going to have a three week period anyway I feel the other side affwcts aren't worth it so why waste money taking this pill

I started on Aviane over 7 years ago and had the same problem. A fairly heavy period for about 3-4 weeks. It was distressing at the time and I was concerned enough to talk to my doctor, but learned that it is not unusual when starting a new bcp. However, at the end of that first month my body got used to the hormones and I haven't had any problems. In fact, over the last few years, my period has become much lighter and shorter than it had previously been. I don't experience any of the side effects mentioned in the rest of this thread (although many of them can be common). I want to remind everyone that this thread might be a little biased with comments from women who have had a bad experience with Aviane, so please don't believe that everyone on it has these same issues. The majority of women on Aviane are perfectly content and have no reason to seek out these threads to comment (which would normally have been me had I not stumbled upon this and wanted to help!)

The same thing happened to me! I am a very mellow person and have been on Alesse for years. I went to the pharmacy and they gave me Aviane. I just took it because I figured they were no longer offering Alesse.

Within a couple of days, I became so angry! I was emotionally out of control for a week and finally I just tossed the pills.

I have been taking Aviane for almost 8 months now. I am an emotional wreck and depressed. I am also always angry. I just do not feel like myself anymore. I also broke out on my face with acne. I was a pretty stable and happy person before I started taking these. I guess its time for a change!
