Hi! My brother (he's 25) has a problem with his stomach. Two days ago he went to see a doctor because he had bloody stools. The first thing that doctor asked him is did he take any drugs. For three days he used one kind of painkillers (naproxen) to relieve his headaches. Is it possible to have bloody or tarry stools from naproxen?

Yes! It's definitely possible if you take blood thinners or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (like aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen…). Black, tarry and bloody stools are one of serious side effects when you use those medicaments. Also it can be the symptoms of a naproxen overdose. A black stool usually means that the blood is coming from the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract (probably stomach). Be careful with naproxen, it can make a serious damage with your stomach!
