they cannot tell! you can break the hymen (that covers the vagina) through exercise or tampon use!

The OBGYN can tell if your hymen is intact, but cannot tell how or why it broke.
I am told that horseback riding, tampon use, and other forms of masterbation MAY stretch or tear a hymen. However, in this day and age, I don't think most OBGYN will assume a torn hymen means sexual activity.
They may ASK you if you are active. And, given patient-doctor confidentiality, I would be sure to tell them the truth. They may have more advice for you especially if you are engaging in certain practices. It's impossible for me to say what they are, cause I'm not the OBGYN.
So, tell them the truth...and excuse your mom from the room before hand... just tell her that you're an adult now... and that you have some adult questions for the doc. She should respect your privacy. If not, you've got some other issues with your mom to deal with later...
