Hello, I would like to know something about dust mites, because they are threatening my son’s health. He is 14 years old and has just been diagnosed with dust mite allergy. How can I help him? Can UV light really kill dust mites to help alleviate allergies? What should I do?

Well, I am not that certain about the UV light, but I do know several tricks tha might help. You should not have much furniture in the house and also you should do the major cleaning and washing every week (rags should be washed too). Basically, you should do anything to keep your son away from the dust mites, but at one point, you will probably have to get him some medicaments.

Get a dustmite spray: Dust Mite and Flea Control as well as may be the UV Wand. The UV kills the DNA in dustmites, but keep in mind you can never kill all dustmites. I suggest that you have people take their shoes off at the front door and don't have any animals. I became allergic to dustmite in my 40s and it has been a pain for me, but I have learned how to control it. I also iron/steam my bed with sheets on them, wash sheets twice a week, don't get on bed with clothes I wore outside. Good luck!

Hey I'm not sure about the UV lights but as for the dust mite spray I'm sure that works but why would you ever want to spray chemicals onto the stuff that surrounds you, its probably more dangerous to your health then the mites, by-the-way its not the mites themselves your allergic to its their fecal matter.

Since we moved to Spain things are much better for my son. No carpets, take them up and replace with tiles or wood/laminate. No curtains, replace with wooden blinds. Wash bedding regularly, twice a week is best as then the droppings are removed. High temps aren't necessary as much as regular washing. Also keep the cuddly toys out...only one and put that in the washing machine or freezer ( overnight will kill the mites, but you also need to remove the droppings. ) The damp air makes everything worse which is probably why my son is so much healthier here in Spain. No longer on medication, within days of moving here all chest infections ceased as did the cough and asthma. Miracle!

many times in these , and similar sites, the replies begin with "i don't know , but..."

if you don't know something ,don't reply. I waste so much time sifting thru garbage replies on the web.

i used an ultraviolet device to rid my house of dust mites. the device works by killing an airborne fungus that is an essential element in the dust mite's diet. it definitely worked. my skin cleared up, itching disappeared, etc. it was a long time ago. when the uv bulb went out i could not find the product on the internet, so i discontinued using it. the device was constructed so as to channel air through a duct that contained a uv bulb that killed the airborne fungus. i estimate it took about a week to prove its effectiveness. it totally solved my dust mite problem.

UV light is NOT effective at killing dust mites!

The UV lights in mattress cleaners do not kill dust mites. To have any chance of killing a dust mite, the UV light would have to be held over a single spot for about 60 seconds - and even then, it would only work if the dust mite was stationary on the surface of the mattress.
