I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my cervical spine about a year ago. I have had 4 series of steroid injections, to C3-C6.
The first day or so after the injections I am in severe pain in my muscles. The injection site is tender but the pain is in the neighboring musculature; upper arms, shoulders and in midway between my shoulder blades. After this stage, I feel great, with no pain for a while.
I am virtually pain free (unless I do something to aggravate it) for about 3 months. My question is why does it hurt so horribly the first day or so after having this done?

My understanding of the pain is that it's just the pain of breaching the cartilage in the spine which would cause some intense pain. DOes that make any sense or does at least explain things?
