Hi, I am a forty five years old woman. I have high cholesterol levels and I take Lovastatin for it. Recently I have been feeling pain in my right knee. After some tests my doctor has told me this is a consequence of me taking cholesterol lowering drug. I was sent to physical therapy, but the doctor didnt tell me if I should stop taking my meds. Is my knee tendon going to heal even though I havent stopped using Lovastatin?

Hi, I am very sorry to hear about your situation. Having to deal with high cholesterol levels is bad enough, but to have another problem caused by the drug you use to treat this serious condition is really something else. Unfortunately, statins, like Lovastatin, that are used for the treatment of high cholesterol levels can cause muscle and tendon problems. These cholesterol lowering drugs are somewhat a new method used in treatment of this condition so some of the side effects are still being discovered. The problem you are having is caused by the process of cell breakage in your tendons. It is a good thing this condition was discovered. This means you have a great chance for recovery. I dont mean to scare you, but this process of muscle and tendon cells deterioration can lead to death. I am surprised your doctor didnt tell you to stop taking your cholesterol lowering meds. You should talk to him about this as soon as possible. There are other drugs and also dietary changes that can help you control your cholesterol without the use of Lovastatin.
