When I first started taking Claritin for really severe allergies this season (due to abnormally high precipitation resulting in record pollen and mold counts this Fall), I would give it an A+ for solving my awful allergy symptoms and not making me drowsy. In fact, Claritin and a cup of coffee would actually rev me up, almost like speed, for the evening classes that I teach, and I could still get drowsy enough to sleep with a benadryl or two around midnight.

For several weeks, I took 10 to 20mg Reditabs daily (20mg is actually the recommended dose in some countries). I realized I could vary the dosage depending, I suppose, on the allergens in the air - 10mg after a rain would suffice, but I required 20mg on a dry, breezy day to keep from weeping, sneezing, coughing, snorting, etc. And interestingly, 20mg not only cleared me completely up, but it did not make me drowsy - if anything, I was even more speeded up! I had to consciously slow my speech down while teaching.

However, after these several weeks, I started developing numbness in my left arm (it would just "go to sleep" while holding my cat), shriveled fingertips, a lack of appetite, very light short sleeps (which grew shorter and shorter until I couldn't sleep at all) with weird lucid dreaming (dreaming while still awake!), a racing mind, a very dry mouth and a sore dry throat every morning, arthritic-like joint pains, and then arrhythmias every time I checked my blood pressure (and I've never had irregular heart beats before). I also noticed that my personality seemed to be changing - I was far more irritable, unable to stop ruminating in anger about things I would normally find trivial, talking non-stop to myself (??), and finally paranoid - with an alarming feeling of some unknown threat.

Doing some research, these symptoms matched those of so many people's posts on the internet, so I decided I had to quit Claritin ASAP, as allergy season is almost over, and I need some sleep as well as a return to normal! Well, since I've quit, even though my allergy symptoms haven't returned, I've fallen into deep depression in just two days, dreading to get out of bed and sleeping 12 or more hours a day, feeling bad social phobia (just going to the store is stressful), and experiencing periodic tingling in my extremities. My blood pressure has been very erratic - BUT the good news is that I have no more arrhythmias, and my left arm doesn't go numb on me. If I can just shake this dark depression (a strong coffee helped just a bit) and regain some motivation...and stop wanting to go back to bed and pull the covers over my head all day....

Talk about a major mood swing!! And I'm falling asleep as I type this, and I've already napped twice today - for hours! After four cups of strong coffee!

Many professionals may say that Claritin is not addictive, or nothing that would cause withdrawal, but I beg to differ.

Yes, all of the above, I concur. Also experienced memory loss while taking it. Stopped it, and depressed

I have taken Claritin for 5 days. I have inexplicable anger, a manic amount of energy, I'm talking to myself all the time, and now I have insomnia.

I never had any of these problems while taking Claritin, but I took it daily for probably a year or more, and finally decided I needed to give my body a break from it. I probably should have weaned myself off but I didn't. The first bad withdrawal symptom (which I expected, I had the same thing happen when I stopped Zyrtec) was insomnia. I was forced to use Benadryl to get any sleep. I felt okay for a week or two, but then suddenly started having really terrible anxiety, just out of nowhere, and it's been going on for several days now. Hope it clears soon, it's horrible :-/

Guest, as it’s been over a year since your post, was wondering if you had any improvements. My son has been on for years, and concerned about side effects of going off.

Hello. On September 15, 2022, I was bitten by several wasps. As per the last doctor's instruction, I took 2 10mg Claritin upon being bitten because of the severe reaction I get to bites. Within minutes of having ingested the Claritin, I became extremely dizzy; my whole body seemed to be revved up; outcome was loss of consciousness which resulted in smacking my forehead into the corner of the wall and falling to the floor. I was down on the ground for about 3 minutes. I managed to call a family member for help who then called the paramedics. I was unable to stand on my own. The attending physician said 'it can't be the Claritin,' BUT...in fact Claritin CAN work as quickly as within 10 to 20 minutes. I will NEVER take antihistamines again like that again upon being bitten by wasps. The main ingredient in Claritin is Loratidine and a side effect is in fact Loss of Consciousness.

After taking the child's dose of Claritin daily for several years I decided to stop. Several days later I ended up in the Emergency room with pain and numbness in my left arm, sweating, nausea, and feeling extremely anxious ( classic heart attack symptoms). I am glad to report it was not and I was sent home with no answers. As I looked at what changes I had made, coming off Claritin was the only one. Over the next several days I sweated and urinated like I was a junkie detoxing ( and actually I think I was). My mood 2 days later was greatly improved ( I had been having anger and obsessive negative thoughts) and I was finally able to get a deep breath.
I experienced something similar coming off of Zyrtec.
With Fall around the corner I am concerned but think I will try to manage my allergies with old school antihistamines.

My family member had loss of consciousness from wasp stings and ended up in a coma. They were not taking claritin so you may have had this result just from the stings. Hard to believe but it can very well happen.
