I read on an informative website about diabetes that smoking is a risk factor for diabetes. Does that mean that smoking could lead me to develop diabetes? I have been a social smoker on and off for quite a few years now, and I am worried about getting diabetes after reading that mentioned on this website. Please tell me more.

The diabetes you are referring to is Type 2 diabetes which is something we develop later in life, as opposed to Type 1 diabetes which is genetically determined. Even so, both these types of diabetes are today manageable. As leading causes for development of Type 2 diabetes are mentioned lifestyle, certain pre-existing medical conditions and genetic factors. And the link between smoking and later development of diabetes is basically formed upon the idea that people who are inclined towards healthy lifestyle which excludes smoking are less likely to have other factors like being overweight that are more closely linked to diabetes.
