My husband has had severe painless haemorrhage from his gut per rectum off and on for over ten years. The incidences of attack have gradually increased over time, so that now he is having four or five in a year.On several occasions he has had to be resuscitated in the ambulance on the way to hospital. The consultants treat him for blood loss, but say they cannot do any more for him. He has had numerous colonoscopies and CT scans over the years but no cause for the bleeding, or site of the bleed has ever been identified. He has also been screened for a Meckels diverticulum which was negative. They have diagnosed diverticulitis in the absence of evidence that it could be anything else.Whenever my husband has had a colonoscopy, the doctor has commented that the entire colon is very inflamed and contains numerous diverticulae.Does anyone know of any help group or source of information that could offer advice on how to reduce or preferably eliminate the inflammation in the gut?

Hello, Bella.
Some of the recommendations in case of diverticulae are:
- Increase your fiber intake: Eating a diet high in fiber can help to reduce inflammation in the gut. Foods that are high in fiber include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds.
- Take probiotics: Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help to reduce inflammation in the gut. Try to include probiotic-rich foods such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi in your diet. You can also take probiotic supplements.
- Reduce stress: Stress can increase inflammation in the gut, so it’s important to practice stress-reducing activities such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises.
- Avoid trigger foods: Certain foods can trigger inflammation in the gut. These include processed foods, sugar, dairy, and gluten. Try to avoid these foods and eat an anti-inflammatory diet instead.
- Exercise regularly: Exercise can help to reduce inflammation in the gut. Aim to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week.
- Get enough sleep: Sleep is important for reducing inflammation in the gut. Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night.
