I have experienced the same thing and have been told that it was my hormones because of my age. Im only 40 and have checked all my levels and all came back just fine. The only meds I take daily is lexapro 20mg besides my vitamins. In doing some research I have found that many people experience Alopecia (hair loss) with Lexapro. I am going to stop taking it and change my antidepressent immediately .

Thanks all - I started on Lexipro 10mg, to reduce the hot flashes and get some sleep at night (hot flashes were nightly). Yes, noticed hair thinning rapidly and such a different texture, dull, dry, wouldn't hold a curl, etc. I was told to reduce slowly (1/2 it weekly then 1/4 then done). I will do so and hope the regrowth starts eventually. I'll visit this blog to see how we are all doing. Best, AJ

I've been taking escilatopram (lexapro) 20 mg per day for 3 months and I am having now such a great hair loss!! If this continue for several months I'll become bald. I really don't know if it's better to ask the Doc or a change or wait 5 or 6 months to see if it grows back normal as before as experimented by another reviewer . Thanks !!

Wellbutrin causes lots of hair loss, probably more than lexapro....

I have been taking 20mg Lexapro for approx 4 years.
I first noticed a bad reaction 3 months into taking Lex at a hairdressing appt where I had my foils redone. My scalp was so sensitive that I had blisters and burns from the foils. I have been seeing the same hairdresser for over a decade. She asked me if I had recently changed any medications as we had no idea why I had such a severe reaction to something I had been having done for years. I told her I had started taking Lex. It's a common problem apparently.
I can't have any bleaching product on my scalp now.
I also have handfuls of hair fall out and constant regrowth of "new" hair (fly aways) because of the amount of hair I lose.
My scalp is dry and itchy as well.
I'm going to stop taking Lex. Dr's think you're mad when you bring up scalp issues.
Has anyone else also experienced a sensitivity to hair colour or hair products along with hair loss?
Blisters from hair colour?

Hi there, just wanted to share my experiences because they are positive. I was on lexapro for a while, the hair loss started maybe a few months after taking it, and got worse when I upped my dose to 20mg. I stopped the meds for this reason, and my hair has been growing back steadily since, it's 6 months now since stopping the meds and it is pretty much back to normal. It was shocking as I remember, so thin and you could see my scalp i felt very miserable and unconfident. I have been thinking about goign back onto Lexapro but am remembering now the issues with my hair and I don't think I can do it!

I just want to share with all of you as I am going through this right now. I had a beautiful head of hair, always being complimented on it. Started losing it by the handful. Long story short. I went to a dermatologist and then an Endocronigolist. This is how she figured it out. Blood test! Get levels checked whine on Lexapro. Then stop it for one full week and check blood again. Your pectin level should show a change. Lowering from being off the drug. There's your answer. Now to find a new antidepressant.

Glad I read this. I have hair loss and weight gain and my habits have not changed so this seems to support the medicine being at fault. I wanted off it a while back but my doctor advised against it due to winter being a time of potential increased depression.

OMG! I have the same thing. And I never even thought the "scalp pimples" could be related too. I'm a 62 year old female and expected my hair to thin as I got older but not this much. I did see on another site that Centrum Silver vitamins seem to help.

I also experienced hair thinning and scalp isssues. My dermatologist recommended biotin forte 3 mg with zinc. Have only been on a few weeks, too early to tell if working. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I take zoloft and have lost alot of hair. I tried tapering off zoloft and noticed less hair in the shower, BUT, I was an emotional mess. Why isn't there a lawsuit against the makers of these drugs? A depressed woman with hair loss makes for increased depression. What can be done?

I took lexapro 5mg (half of a pill a day) for a year, and paxil for 3 before that. I had a horribly stressful job that I have luckily switched for a better one. Starting a few months before my wedding a year ago, my normally baby-fine, already thinning hair starting shedding uncontrollably. My scalp felt inflamed. A knot of hair was regularly coming out in the shower. Devastating. I even considered a wig before the wedding! I couldn't figure out what was accelerating things, what was causing this, since I had never experienced this before. I came across some posts on the internet about lexapro/inflammation/hair loss. I decided with my Dr to try going cold turkey on my honeymoon. Yes, I have a supportive husband :-) and the mood issues/detox turned out fine. Hard to be miserable in Italy. Anyway, within 10 days of ceasing the meds, the shedding dramatically stopped. No more knots of hair in the shower. AT ALL. The lexapro was literally all that was changed. Hair has been slowly coming back in the areas (strange areas BTW) that thinned considerably.
I hope this helps someone.
