I was on Zoloft and its generic copy for over 10 yrs. Tried several times to get off it but the "moods" returned. After some more years started to have side effects so resolutely and extremely slowly got off it. Managed appr 5-6 mos, then "the moods" returned. Went on Lexapro (Escitalopram in my country), moods improved immediately but have now this worsening hair loss. So: SSRIs other than Lexapro seem to not effect hair in my case but had other unpleasant effects when taken for a long time. Glad I found this and similar pages as am certain hair loss is caused by the med. Am worried whether I can find a med that hleps my mood but does not remove my hair...

33y/o female. I was on citalopram btw ages of 23 and 31, but also on the estrogen pill. Always shed some hair, but guess the pill masked it a quite a bit. Had to get an IUD instead 2 years ago, and a month later my hair was falling like crazy. Everyday a full hand of hair on my pillow, lots of hair when I showered, etc. I have seen since more than 10 specialists in FOUR countries, including fancy hair doctors who noticed the immense shedding but said my scalp looked normal. 6 full blood panels during these 2 years came back perfectly ok. One year ago, my psyc prescribed escitalopram. Didn't have a depressive crisis since, but my shedding got much worse. Now I have only 1/3 of my original hair, no bald spots, however. Noticed changes in texture. A month ago had an inspiration and decided to look for information about the drug and hair loss. Found many online with similar symptoms. Talked to my psyc and we decided to stop the medication. It has been two weeks w/o the medication, depression is back but I have noticed a slight improvement in term of shedding. Will report back in a month! Please cross your fingers. I bet that adding hair loos to side effects would be a major blow to sales. Good luck to you all.

I took it for 3 months in 2015 during an open heart surgery. I started thinning in the crown and there is no history of baldness in my family. I got off it, took biotin and it stopped shedding but it never grew back to how it used to be. This year I got back on it and noticed it thinning again. After 3 months on it, I'm off and hoping it will grow back.

I've been following this thread and originally came here to try to learn about my hair loss. Yours is the first post I've seen about losing hair when stopping Lexapro. That is exactly my problem. Since starting to wean lexapro 4 months ago, I've gained weight and my hair has been thinning at an alarming rate. Scared to wash it or comb it. I went off lexapro very slowly at the direction of my pharmacist by cutting my 10mg tablet in fourths and going down by 1/4 each month. I was doing fine until I went off totally. Meanwhile, during this time, I noticed weight gain and increasing hair loss. My thyroid is fine and I'm on NDT which I've been on successfully for years. Bottom line, it finally dawned on my that my weightgain and hair loss could be related to tapering Lexapro and I did an online search which brought me here. I am so sorry you're going through this. Heck, I'm sorry I'm going through this! It's horrific to say the least. I wish I had some advice for you, but I'm searching for answers, too, at this point. Just know that you are not alone. At this point, I'm almost considering going back on lexapro just to get my hair back, but as it seems to cause hair loss whether going on or coming off, geez, I don't know what to do.
