It would be hard to say if your hair is thinner if you are in your 40s to 50s

They changed me to cymbalta. Does it cause hair loss too?

I have been on Lexapro 20mg for about 4 months and for the past 2 months I have noticed hair loss. I was placed on Lexapro for sadness that was compounding due to the death of my parents (both died of cancer). I have fine hair to begin with, however I am now getting bald spots, and in the shower the hair falls out in clumps, when I brush, my hair breaks, and when I blow dry my hair it is falling out everywhere. I had been intending to look up on the internet if Lexapro causes hair loss and I find this site. Apparently it does...calling my doctor TODAY....does anybody know of another medication without the hair loss side effect? I quit cold turkey LEXAPRO, about two weeks ago...the hair continued to fall out, but my edge in life was worse than ever...I HAD ZERO PATIENCE FOR ANYTHING :(.... when I realized that the Lexapro was smoothing out my edges I began taking my medications again. I will be calling my doctor today for sure. Good luck to everybody else.

I was on anti-depressant about 8 years ago and more than half of my hair fell out. Two Doctors and my Dermatologist all related it to stress. Very frustrating. I was devastated. The texture of my hair also changed quite drastically. I had it cut very short because it was just a mess and cried. I decided to go off of the anti-depressant without consulting the Dr. I'm glad I did because my hair started growing back, seemingly, a week later. I had two different hair lengths going on as it grew back. While it was in the beginning stages, half of my hair was standing up straight, especially when I would sweat. LOL. it was weird and inconvenient, but my hair kicked back in right away.
I want to give anyone hope that is in the same situation and wondering if it is the drug or not. Dr's don't really know and for some reason, the medical books don't seem to document this as a side effect. All the best.

Debbie, how long had you been on Lexapro before you stopped cold turkey? I had only been on for 4 months when suddenly my hair, previously gorgeous, long, thick, became looking life less and then started to fall. When I realized it was Lexapro I did not stop cold turkey but I tapered for a week. It has been 3 weeks and still hair is falling. Now I am really depressed. At 55, the only beautiful thing I had left that was mine only was my hair. Now it's gone. Please, I need to know how long you had been on Lexapro. Thank you.

It is the drug and the doctors denied it because they are paid to sell the drug.

Because they get paid to sell it, that's why

Thank you Debbie! Haven't heard once that anyone had regrowth! I'm down to 5 mg from 20mg and can't wait to drop it completely. Lost a lot of hair but I've been on for years. Actually feeling more alive! Thanks for your hopeful message!

Agreed. I’m losing a lot of hair after starting Lexapro. I will discuss this with my doctor but I’m not sure they are aware of such a supposed unusual reaction.

My pharmacist, JUST TODAY, assured me there's no connection between hair loss and Lexapro - this is after her going away to research it before coming back to state this. She wasn't impressed about my GP's suggestion to have a tattoo, but after doing the research, she also joined the bandwagon about getting a tattoo. This is the 1st page I came to when I Googled it, so I don't know where she was looking - or if she did - obviously too much money being made on this drug and yes, it DOES put on weight & causes bone disease. Was on it for 2+ years and my eyebrows have just about all gone. GP's only solution - get a tattoo! A bone scan showed I now have Osteopaenia, now needing injections every 6 months for the rest of my life, with already some fractures. I'm 56 years old and with no eye-brows, am looking older/dull, unlike pre-Lexapro. Used to always win work at job interviews - that's now a thing of the past. Have always been active and on a good diet, playing comp tennis, so hair-loss, weight gain and bone disease after Lexapro is way too much of a coincidence. My Sodium Levels are always low - another side-effect. Medical profession unsupportive in getting you off Lexapro, so I weaned myself off, suffering with the brain zaps, and haven't looked back. My weight just about back to normal, so the scar I bear is no eyebrows and Osteopaenia. It amazes me how the manufactures of this product, plus the "so-called" medical professionals who palm it onto the public who trust them, can sleep at night with their conscience - this is NOT new news!

I have been on lexapro for 3 months and the hair has been coming out in clumps more and more each day. I decided to cold turkey this medication because things in my life are going so well. This was a bad decision. I did stop losing hair almost immediately but I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown within a week. I got back on the medication and there goes my hair again. Now what? I have tried so many medicines that are too strong or too weak. Guess I'm back to the drawing board.

I had hair loss and scalp issues that started one month after starting lexapro. Took it for 2 1/2 years because no doctor believed me when I said I thought hair loss was related to the lexapro. The second year on lexapro I started to be itchy all the time. It came and went and seemed worse when I drank a glass of wine. But I couldn’t figure out anything I was eating that could be blamed. I highly suspected lexapro—but no Dr affirmed this. Then I tried weaning and discovered my itching went away! But my anxiety got worse. Finally I took a genetic test which proved that lexapro was not good for me. I stopped taking it 2 months ago and about 2 weeks after stopping it I noticed my hair loss was normal. I still can’t believe that I took lexapro for 2 years and it was bad for me!! so if you have side effects and wonder if it might be the lexapro—it really might be!! Sometimes I think Dr make us think it’s all in our heads! Doesn’t help when you take the med for anxiety or depression!!

I realize this is an old post, but how long after discontinuing Lexapro did it take your hair to stop falling out?
