Well I did the 4 months of Femara and no results. My OB stated I needed to go have an HSG test to make sure my tubes were not blocked and that the hubby needs to get checked as well and then were off to a specialist. Did the HSG on Tuesday and the results were great. No blocked tubes. Pray that the hubby is fine. Does anyone know what other steps they will go since Femara didn't work?

I am 35 years old and have been trying to concieve for over a year. I have always ovulated regularly between days 13 and 15. My doctor recommended that I try Femara to up our odds a little. It is now day 16, I took the femara from days 3-7. I have not ovulated, and my hormone levels are not peaking, according to my Clear Blue Easy fertility monitor. I had a sono on day 14 and had several follicles, but none were big enough. Before taking the femara I ovulated every month. I don't know what to think. My doctor says I need to ovulate by day 18. I am so frustrated. Has anyone else had an experience like this? I know I am being a freak, I am just surprised and getting discouraged.

(believe it or not, clomid!! 25mg/daily!! ) it worked it raised his count and
increased motility!!! I just did an iui with femara 2.5mg 2x daily, and
1500mg of metformin daily. I tried clomid but did not produce a large
enough follicle. With femara I produced 2 large follicles!! I will find out on
July 4th if it worked!!! Pray Hard!!!

I have PCOS-like problems, although I am normal weight. I tried concieving for 6 cycles of increased dosage on Clomid which ended in ovarian hyperstimulation and I had one ovary removed because of it. That scared me off of follicle stimulation.
I started going to a specialist instead of my ob, and we did femara and added an injection to ensure that the eggs are relased, and a low dose corticosteriod. I have severe allergies and asthma, and conceived my first child with no problem when I was on corticosteriods, so I think that has something to do with it. But this dosage was very low.
We conceived on our second cycle of this femara/shot/cortico combo. I think the first cycle didn't take because I had had an HSG and was irritated. However, the pregnancy was ectopic (in the remaining tube stub from the hyperstimulation).
After removal of the ectopic, we had to wait 3 months to try again (uterous had to be operated on because of the location of the ectopic). Once again, we went with femara/shot/cortico and conceived in cycle 2. (again, had HSG in cycle 1 and was irritated).
I wish you the best. I also was concerned about off label use, but I always had a pregnancy test done before starting femara each month because it is possible to get bleeding like a period and still be pregnant. So I would urge you do that each time and ensure you're not already pregnant before starting Femara each month.
I'm due 8/07, but from all indications including a 2nd level 20 week ultrasound, baby has no negative problems from the femara.

My husband and I have been married for 3 yrs., I have not been on any type of brith control for about 4 yrs. and have had no luck getting pregnant. Although we haven't been seriously trying. After going to my ob and explaining she diagnoised me with PCOS. My only symptom is irregular cycles. I can sometimes go 3 - 6 months with no cycle. I did clomid for 3 cycles with no luck. My follicles were not getting the size my ob had hoped. She referred me to a fertility speacialist. after doing some blood tests he diagnoised me with PCOS as well as a thyroid problem. He told me my best option was femara. With the clomid I did not take prenatal vitamins. This time I asked to have prenatal vitamins and femara. After 2 weeks on prenatal vitamins I started my cycle on my own. I started my first dose of femara yesterday. However, I'm very nervous and concerned if this is the right treatment. I have read all the good and bad articles. Has anyone heard of or had any bad effects from this? I can't help but think that if I had been on prenatal vitamins with clomid maybe the results would have been different. Any advice or opinions???

PCOS is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome for those who don't know. Which means your body is insulin resistant and you produce too much estogen.
As far as PCOS and the use of Femara the sucees rates should be similar to the use of clomid. I think it would be a good option. BEST OF LUCK!

I think that femara will work with PCOS, but may also need to be taken with Metformin ( a diabetic medication) which can increase ovulation. Also, diet and exercise are important with the condition.

I have PCOS and had 2 cycles of Femara 2.5mg with no luck. I have miscarried 2-3 times in the past (that we know of) without any medical assistance. I have been on Metformin oral drug therapy for about 1 year steadily and this 2nd round of Femara, for whatever reason, I started my period on day 29. For the past 6mos, I've started on day 33 or 34. We aren't trying a 3rd cycle just because my emotions cannot handle anymore disappointment. Good luck to you since I've ready SOO much positive praise for PCOS women on Femara...I'm an unlucky few it did not help. My doctor DID test my blood the first cycle of Femara on day 26 and said the levels of Progesterone looked good like I ovulated, but who ,knows. Are they treating the thyroid problem with synthroid? Thyroid levels have to be normal before you can get pregnant. Your doc is doing the right thing by switching to femara. Femara causes less long term problems than Clomid, such as poor cervical mucus, enlargement of the ovaries, etc. Clomid shouldn't be taken more than 6 cycles unless you are closely monitered for adverse side affects.
In recent studies femara has an over all sucess rate of 16.7% while clomid only has about a 6% success rate in a 6 cycle treatment course.
Femara also has less side affects than clomid and you are less likely to have multiples.
I would stick with what your fertility specialist is telling you, the vitamins should be taken prior to conception, but really don't have a substantial affect on your actual fertility. Just very good for the baby, when it decides to come.
Make sure the thyroid is being monitered and that you take your medication. Very important! Especially when it comes to your fertility.

Hey just wanted to thank everyone for their positive comments. My husband and I have decided to take a break from all the treatments for a while, maybe a few months. The emotional rollercoaster is too much to handle right now. So we are relaxing (taking vacation trip to Florida in 9 days!!) focusing on other things (buying a motorcycle) and spending time with our nieces and nephews (Noah 6, Ruben 3, Peyton 17 mths, Riley 1 & Kynzie 1) So we have our hands full with them.

For the first time since 1997 I am not ovulating...and am on Femara. I had an 11 day AF complete w/headaches, nausea so bad I thought I might be pg (took 3 tests!), dizziness, it was lovely. So here I am cd19 and no ovulation in sight. I'm more than a little frustrated that the med my RE used to produce a stronger ovulation resulted in NO ovulation!!! :x

I also wonder what other steps there are. I have PCOS (dx in 1999) and have been on Metformin (1700 mg) since Aug 2006. Tried three rounds of Clomid upping by 50 mg to 150mg each time with NO luck - or didn't ovulate according to progesterone blood tests. Now with a fertility specialists and have done one round of Femara. Did day 12 ultrasound yesterday and was told that the biggest follicle was around 12.5 so would not do a shot. Was told to BD every other day starting tomorrow and then come in for progesterone in early Sept (day 24). Was told by the nurse that did the ultrasound that if this didn't work, then no more Femara cycles. Does that sound strange to anyone? I also had extreme breast pain during the Femara treatment - which to me indicated a reduction in Estrogen and therefore would think that the meds were at least doing something right, right?
This is all SO frustrating. I feel like doctors lump everyone in the same boat when we are clearly very different. Argh.

I started taking Femara in July and am now on my third cycle. My mc is 30 days on the dot and has not been extended due to Femara. My "issue" is low progesterone so taking Femara is supposed to help increase my lining for implantation. I've been pregnant and miscarried twice. I've got my fingers crossed that the third time is the charm!

I am 27 and my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for 2 1/2 years. Started at a specialist, we had the whole work up done: blood work was great, HSG looked great, sperm a little bit low. I have had a lot of problems with ovarian cysts though. Planning to do IUI if 2 cyles of femara doesn't work. Supposed to start femara tomorrow (first round) really worried about all the warnings of off label use and birth defects, but really want to be a mom. I am getting very anxious and I little disappointed about not conceiving yet. Does anyone think this med is unsafe?
