I had posted a few posts down, that several years ago, I had a hemorroidectomy that went bad. I suffered for several months, until I was referred to a different doctor, by my gynecologist. Thank God, because the surgery he did on me, was a total sphincterectomy, that fixed the mess that was made from the first surgeon. I screamed, cried and moaned constantly for months before the second surgery. I couldn't really go anywhere, couldn't c**p except for small pieces, it was hell. If she is still in pain, something may be wrong that she needs to get an independent opinion from a different doctor who knows what he is doing. She shouldn't waste anymore time suffering. The surgery that fixed me up, was so much easier. She may have a tear inside her rectum, but I am no doctor. Make her go check it out, who knows, maybe she has anal stenosis like I had from the first doctor's mistakes. I hope she gets help soon and finally is rid of the pain.

How long was the pain after the surgery?

I suffered from piles for approx 15yrs. It was two pregnancies that started the piles in motion. I was basically constipated from two months pregnant, through birth and on until my daughter was 2 months old. The pain during giving birth was bad, two days later it was excruciating. I just had a new baby, was in terrible pain, had post natal depression and was expected to be a happy first time mum. I couldn't have a bm without taking harsh drugs, nothing else worked. This continued for about 2 months, then one day I spent the day in the sea and suffered from sun stroke, felt miserable but also got diarrhea (yes bizarre, constipated for approx 9 months then straight into diarrhea), but from then on bms pretty much went back to normal, but the piles were here to stay. I struggled with the piles and learnt that I couldn't go out dancing all night and expect to play sports the next day, the pain from the piles was again excruciating. Pregnancy number 2 came along without any constipation but the damage had already been done and I had hardened to the pain of living with piles. 2nd birth was much better. After living with piles for over 8yrs I spoke to my Doctor about having them removed, she warned me about the pain and stated they were likely to return later in life. I got the message and proceeded no further. A few years later I got back into playing netball, I was shocked to find that I had literally wet myself while playing. WTF. I had piles this was a minor problem, nothing a discreet pad couldn't deal with. I'm good to go. So I played netball for about another 6yrs. While I was moving on the court I couldn't feel any pain, but once the game was over and I needed to walk to the car this is when the real problems started. At times I felt like I would pass out before reaching the carpark. I remember walking about 300 metres to the pub across the road from the courts only to get there and have to sit on nearest seat before once again almost passing out. I was in so much pain I didn't even have the energy to walk to the bar and order a drink. I also didn't want to tell my friends that I had piles so suffered in silence. Of course I turned up the next week for another round of torture. One day I was having a conversation with a friend who out of the blue mentioned that she had a pelvic sling, after having 3 children her pelvic floor muscle's were stuffed. I had the same problem and the constipation during the first pregnancy was a major
cause.

I was thankful for her frankness and decided to seek help for my problem. My Doctor had no problem referring me to a specialist to sort out my pelvic floor problem. Tests were done and I needed a pelvic sling, but the Specialist took one look at me and she stated that the hemorrhoids were a major concern. She referred me to another specialist and within a month I had both surgeries done. The hemorrhoid specialist could not believe that I had put up with it for 15yrs. My condition was bad, internal and external. Surgery day was here, both procedures done within a few hours I don't recall being in a lot of pain immediately after the surgery. Next day I woke up in hospital and decided to have a shower. I got out of bed and proceeded to the shower, I remember bending over and trying to take a bloody nappy off that was taped to me. I started feeling dizzy so tried to get back to my bed but passed out on the floor and woke to find both my specialists standing over me. My blood pressure was 92/45 but was assured it was acceptable after such surgery. I went home that day and settled in for a whole lot of pain. I was sore in the groin area, around my thighs where where two incisions had been made to insert the sling and of course my backside. Just to add to the pain I also had a major tooth ache around day 4. I laugh at this now but I had one wheat bag and I didn't know where to put it. Believe it or not it was the tooth ache that won, I but the wheat bag on my face.

Every single BM was painful. My husband slept in another room as it hurt just to feel movment in the bed. Day 5 was the worst, I worked myself up into a terrible state on the toilet and passed out. By day 7 I was out and about, visited the bank to sign documents and went to the dentist to sort the tooth ache. I was in mild pain for some time but each day got better. Throughout the whole recovery I followed the specialist instructions, food, meds, exercise. I mostly showered and bathed when in pain or felt anxious.

This was the most painful experience of my life but the most liberating. I told my Specialist I would never recommend this surgery as I would not wish this pain on anyone, however I would do it again in a heart beat. 5yrs on and I still play netball. I am now an active swimmer, walker and cyclist and did my first 1/4 Ironman last year. In 2012 I swam in a 1/2 Ironman team and last year I cycled 90Km in another team. This surgery has changed my life. Because of my pelvic sling I am limited to the types of physical activity I can do, as I walk instead of run and can't cycle while standing and a whole heap of other restrictions, but my quality of life has changed amazingly.

Today I say if your Doctor is not supportive get a second opinion don't put it off like I did. Yes it is unbelievably painful but if you are experiencing the pain that I had before the surgery it is well worth it.

I just had the surgery too and after the numbness wore off damn. now it feels like I am ripping apart down there. the worst part is I only had the left side done because my doctor said the pain would be to much to handle. so in a month I have to have the right side done. I too let the situation go because of embarrassment and now the skin is so stretched out that every time I go to the bathroom they fill with blood. I compare the pain to having a red hot poker in your butt that stays there. I also got pain meds but I also got valium so I could sleep and relax and take laxatives I just had my gall bladder removed a month and a half ago so my situation was getting worse. for those that are embarrassed to talk to your doctor talk to them because the longer you wait the worse it gets. mine started in 2005 after several surgeries and I have had several since then. In the long run you won't have to deal with the hemorrhoids any more and you can go back to spicy food and not worry about the burning I am counting the days to freedom of pain but make no mistake this is a painful recovery.

oh man i am not looking foward to having mine done, I was told by a surgeon after i had my second daughter via c section, that i needed them done as they were like a 70 year olds, I was 30. now i am 37 and have finally had enough of them and the bleeding the uncomfortableness of them, i went and got them looked at by a bum man, and he said i cant have them banded they are too bad for that, I said to him it cant be any worse than having your stomach cut and ripped apart twice,, from c sections and that is very painfull.. he laughed at me, lol.. I had spent the last 7 years dealing with my childs health issues and havent worried about myself as her stuff comes first hence why it has taken so long for me to get round to it,, just lucky i suspose reading your stuff . i have a big house kids bedrooms up stairs they have there own bathroom and the husband may be sleeping by himself for a while lol and spare room close to downstairs bathroom lounge and bath four or five steps from the toilet lol

This was very helpful and I appreciate you being so honest. I was like you and at first thought wow this was easier than I thought this would go, then the pain began and not being able to find a comfortable position was exhausting. Thanks again for letting me know what to expect. It's not great to know I will feel like this for longer than I really want to, but at least I have a guideline to as what I will go through and for how long.

Thank you so much for telling your story. I am currently on day two. Pain killers barely help. The difference between yours and mine is I also had a Botox injection in my rear end because my hemorrhoids were so bad the caused fishers. Not sure if you now what that is (a rip in the anal opening). So I tend to poo my self , which in turn starts to burn and hurt really bad. I find that baths work great but I can not stay in them for long because I am a mother of three. I have a four year old, a two-year old, and a four months old. Best of luck to you. Again I say thank you because now I do not feel so alone.

Day 7 after external excision for hem the size of a robins egg when swollen and THD surgery for 3 internals. I have followed MDs advice to the letter. In bed almost the entire time. Awesome wife has helped me every step...she has to have wings! Tons of water, hydro condone 1x to 2x every 5 hrs, RX grade ibuprofen @ same interval for 1st 5 days, RX grade nerve pill 2x per day 1st 5 days and RX grade stool softener 2x per day. Warm baths 2x per day and frozen peas wrapped in t-shirt applied to target area as needed. Age 42-fairly pain tolerant. Surgeon told wife surgery went well with no complications. Screen name will be Joe and you can ask me anything. I will try to answer as thoughtfully and as honestly as I can. I hope you will allow me to use this forum as a form of selfish therapy. Joe

My mother who is 78 years old has surgery scheduled for internal rhoids. After reading your stories, I'm afraid that the pain may do her in. Seems too risky for a senior citizen. Is it advisable for the elderly to attempt to endure this hell, despite the doc's eagerness to get into their butts ?

O.M.G.
I had the internal hemorrhoid surgery, she removed the external roids, the internal, and the 3 major spots of intestine they normally sprout from.
I THOUGHT I knew pain. I thought my internal external roids were the worst pain I had ever experienced outside childbirth.
I tell you now - with NO exaggeration - this post op pain is worse than recovery from giving birth. This is the worst thing that I have ever ever experienced.
I am on day 11. And I can barely walk to the bathroom to sit and scream for death.
Unless your roids have actually sent you into a panic attack where you honestly screamed and cried like a baby begging for relief or death. Do not get this surgery. Do not.
It is not worth it.
I was in the er 4 days post op. I received 4 vials of morphine. It did NOT stop the pain. MORPHINE DID NOT EASE THE PAIN.
I wish I had read just one of these before my surgery day. I would have backed out so fast.....
I am miserable, every day is pain followed by pain along with more pain and in the night even more pain.
I cannot stress enough to anyone that is thinking about this surgery do not do it it's not worth it I am using my phone to talk to text because even texting makes me nauseous
There are other details that I've forgotten to add but I can't I have to go
