Hello all. I just wanted to post my story to maybe help someone like everyone has helped me.
I am a 51 year old female who has had internal hemorrhoids since I was 15. They didn't hurt, but bled A LOT. I was able to manage them until about a year ago. They progressed to stage 4 and constantly prolapsed. I am on my feet all day so I was in constant fear of bleeding all over myself. Everyone always asked why I never wore bright colored cloths - especially living in Florida. I also began having severe Anemia and even had to have an iron infusion (6-hours with an IV at a cancer center).
In an effort to NOT have surgery, I opted for Ultoid treatment first. It is an electronic treatment that is non invasive and it helped shrink them and lessened the bleeding...but after 5 treatments and one IRC treatment, the doctor said mine were too bad and I should try banding.
The doctor said I had 5 large hemorrhoids and two small ones!
Next I tried banding. From September 2009 until April 2010 I had nine...yes, NINE...bandings done. They stopped the bleeding but the prolapse was still there and I began to have pain, really bad pain. I should say that the first banding was the worst pain I ever experienced in my life and I wasn't expecting it so it was horrible because I didn't schedule any time off of work. The remaining 8 bandings were not as bad, I guess my body adapted and the largest mass was out of the way.
I researched and found an outstanding colorectal surgeon in the Tampa Bay area. She was a general surgeon for a number of years and then went into this specialty. I asked how many she had performed and she told me over 200. The surgery was performed with a scalpel and stitches were done. It was performed in an outpatient center and took about an hour. I was able to urinate so they sent me home within about 5 hours from the check-in time. I had local anesthesia and no problems coming out of it or with nausea after. I went home in no pain and immediately took pain meds when I got home so that when the numbing from the surgery went away, I would already have pain meds in my system.
I have a friend who has a hemorrhoidectomy about a year ago and so I knew the reality and the possible complications. I also started reading these boards last July (today is May 23). So I was more than prepared...and I think that has helped A LOT!
My surgery was done on Wednesday, May 12, 2010. On Monday, May 17 (5-days) I was able to drive myself to see my sick Mother. It wasn't comfortable, but I could do it.
I have had no spasms at all, and no severe pain. My first bowel movement was on the second day and yes, it was painful, but not the pass-out, cry yourself to death pain. Today is day 11 and my BM this morning was painful, but bearable and less than the pain of the first week's BM.
From day one, I took 400mg if colace, a scoop of Miralax every morning, and 4 tablespoons of mineral oil (as per my Dr.) twice a day. I did this the first week and now do the same except I only take 3 tablespoons of mineral oil and just at night. I also added psyllium husk on day 6 via capsule three times a day.
The first two days, I took Oxycodone 7.5mg every 4 hours whether I thought I needed it or not. Days 3-5 every six hours. after that I took them in the evenings so ensure a good sleep so that my body could heal. Now I only take it if I feel I need it and skipped last night and slept well.
Things that saved me. A sitz bath number one. My bath tub number two. Also, I bought a sprayer that hooks to my shower and it proved to be my best investment. My bedroom bath has only a shower and the toilet is close enough to the shower so that I could spray my behind as I had my BM and I think that helped. I also always stepped right into the shower after "going" and could spray myself clean with the hand help sprayer while squatting.
I am so happy I had this done. The pain I was feeling right before the surgery was so much more than what I felt after that I was immediately grateful. I'm now wondering why I let my embarrassment keep me suffering for al this time.
The surgery site is still swollen and seeping (not fecal) but looks better than before the surgery. I had stitches at 3 places externally. The first set came out on day 6. The second on around day 9 and the last yesterday (day 10). My wounds opened up yesterday without bleeding and I called my doctor. She said that happens about 25% of the time and she said she does do not restitch (unless there is severe bleeding). She said they will close on their own and be barely noticeable and restitching could cause infection. I will go see her on Monday to be sure there is no other problem.
Again, I am HAPPY I had this done. Overjoyed actually. I am lucky, I know, with the low level of pain I experienced but I literally had no life for the last year. Not a day went by that I wasn't in pain and thinking about my behind. If they had remained manageable I would have never even thought of the surgery - and actually over the last 35 years I never even thought about it. But if you are in misery and it is impacting your life, don't hesitate to have it done. Just get prepared. Read all that you can even if it scares you. Prepare for the worst pain in your life and line up time off from work and friends or family to help you. Stock up on supplies before the surgery...food and medicine/equipment.
I think my first banding was so bad because I had no idea what to expect and that this surgery has been better because I was so prepared. That and I am apparently one of the lucky ones who has had manageable pain. I hope it stays that way and that I don't develop any complications. I so want to have a normal live and normal looking behind...and I want that as soon as possible.
My thoughts and prayers to all out there who have had to go through this. It is an emotional and physical nightmare. I hope we all heal well and can resume a normal life. I wait for the day to go 24 hours without once thinking about my hiney...I wish you all the same.
Best to all...

Oh...to the "Guest" who had surgery on 5/14 and asked about the BM. On day two all I was able to do was tiny little balls of poop. That is normal. I also passed some "fleshy stuff" that was obviously skin. That is normal too. The body naturally freaks out with this surgery and it takes a little while for it to readjust. It did this to me too when I had my first banding. I couldn't poop for 5 days! After surgery, I didn't get back to normal "amounts" until day 5. And I am still taking the mineral oil and so they are really, really soft and not well formed.
I wish you a speedy recovery.

Hi.
for anyone thinking of having this surgery i would say definitely Do! I had surgery 8 weeks ago on three large internal hemorrhoids and my life is transformed. It was very painful going to the loo after but I ate lots of fruit and vegetables. Not too much, and took my stool softeners and it was bearable. By a week after I was well on the way to recovery. One thing I have noticed on your website is that you all say you soaked in water to relieve pain and are still doing this weeks later. I had my operation in London and I was told strictly NO BATHS for at least 3 days and if I could go longer that would be good. I wonder if this hastened my recovery because I think normally with any wound, internal or external you try to keep it dry or at least with only the bodys natural moisture to help it heal.
I can imagine with the acute pain that comes just after a bowel movement in the first few days water may be soothing but I think if you can grit your teeth and bear it the water is probably not helping.
After years of suffering with profuse bleeding, mess, pain and discomfort I feel normal again and just wish I had had this op a long time ago.
Good luck!

hi
i had surgery on monday and ws discharged tuesday afternoon , i was in comfortable pain so went strait to bed and slept , wednesday i was in bed most of the day and got up for an hour but then came back to bed with painkillers .
this morning i was up to do my first bowel movement and i have never experianced so much pain like this before even when i had my hemroids , nothing had prepared me for this , it was ecruating pain and i nearly passed out and i was sweating uncontrolaby . I then went for a bath and was sobbing like an hysterical baby :$ :'( :'( . I then managed to get back to my bed with allot of my wifes help and she even called an ambulance she was that worried. but before the ambulance had time to arrive i had to get back to the loo and uncontroled straining started and i soiled myself , with this i was hysterical and sobbing . I was so upset and in agony , my ife ran another bath for me , and while i sat there trying to clean myself sobbing , my wife had to clean up after my adventure to the loo.
i was then given tramado , parecetomal and iburophen , all of which helped but i still have throbbing in my back passage whenther this is because i need to go the loo again or because of the bruising and swelling because of the surgery , but ive taken 5ml of oral morphien which has heped takethe edge off everything but im still feeling sore and bruised. I have kept up with the lactouse 15mls 3x a day , but i have taken extra today because of taking morphien .
I am hoping it will get better in the long run , and i have to see my surgeon in three weeks for a follow up . If i had known what i was going to have to go through after surgery i may have had second thoughts , but my life before surgery was just as much hell to live with than it is now . I keep thinking no pain no gain , and i usually have a hight tolerance to pain , but even i have cried and sobbed like a baby today and have said some horrible things to my dear wife while i was hysterical with pain . and im a 36 year old 6ft 4 strong man . so im hoping this is for the best in the end .
if your doctor or surgeon reccomends you have surgery make sure you are sure you want to go through with it as its a long painfull road to recovery , and do your homework , and make sure you are given enough pain killers including percsription painkillers which you cannot get ove the counter , ie oralmorph and tramadol . or try to talk to someone who has hadthis done .
goodluck to you all. x

I'm a 65 year old male and had two hemorrhoids removed 9 days ago. I thought I was doing badly until I read these letters. I wonder why the doctor didn't tell me anything about what to expect, like how many days/weeks/months it would take to recover.
I discovered the relief that a tub of warm water could bring on my own. I found out on my own that urinating would be a problem, and going would be often. Flomax had taken care of that issue before, but now, it feels like I'm not even taking flomax. I found out 9 days afterward does not necessarily result in an improvement in pain during a BM than it was after only a few days. I found out on my own that a 2 inch by 2 inch gauze pad would absorb any blood and stool, preventing my underwear from being soiled. I found out on my own that the pain pills I was given can cause constipation. I was not told that flatulence would be EXTREMELY excessive. I was given a stool softener but no one suggested to me that it would cause excessive flatulence. But even though I quit them on the second day, the flatulence continues.
I had a BM after about 24 hours, and the spotting of blood ended on the sixtx day.
I thought I should go to the doctor today but my wife suggested that I Google hemorrhoid operation recovery because her sister had done so and found that recovery times are long.

Just a reminder to those of you worried about not doing a bm after 2 days post op, that your bowels will be empty from no food before the operation and then the enema - there is nothing to pass for a couple of days so dont get too stressed. Dont mistake swollen passge for needing to poo! Dont push too hard!
I think I was luckier than some since I was given some lovley internal local anesthetic injections while into the back passage while still under the genreal. When I woke up and for the next 12 hours there was no pain! Sorry to say that wears off but it was a good start and allowed me to get home without tears.
Also why dont men use womens sanitary towels instead of soilingtheir underwear - no one need know they are very discrete these days.
Love the comments from everyone - it is good to know we share the pain!

I have to agree with most here. I had the PPH surgery 3 weeks ago and i still feel terrible. From day one of my surgery i was in immence pain and called the surgeons office 3 times, only to be told the pain is normal. Come to find out i ended up in the ER because they loaded me with 4 sodas, tons of water after the surgery hoping to get me to urinate. Instead of putting a cath in me, the lady who seemed to want to go home as it was like 8pm now, said she called the on call Dr and he said to go on home and i should urinate later. Well.. i hurt so bad the next day that i ended up in the ER that night and had them put a cath in me. SO ALWAYS HAVE A CATH or make sure you can urinate BEFORE YOU GO HOME AFTER SURGERY!!!! Anyways on day 10 i couldnt take the irritation of the cath anymore and the Dr's office said it would be 3 or 4 days before they could see me to remove. Well by this time i had enough. I read online how to remove. I cut and drained the cath myself. Then removed it. I felt so much better for the urination part. Day 12 after surgery i was taking 4 baths a day, praying to God every minute and thinking that alot of things afterlife would be much better. I again called the Dr's office only to be told that pain is normal and some people handle it different. Well i suffered for the next two days in extreme pain knowing something is NOT right. I was in tears and baths were not helping. I was taking 3 percocets at a time and nothing helped at all. Sure enough on Day 15 i had enough. I went to the ER again and said something has to be done and i'm not leaving til i am better. They called the On call surgeon and he said admit me and they would look at me the next day. So now its day 16 and im in the hospital again. My original surgeon stops by and says well i see where your white blood cell is high so they put me on antibiotics and tried different pain meds on me. Nothing was helping. Finally the Dr said he would take me into surgery again as soon as an opening came that day for an OR room. In the meantime he examined me and said i might have a fissure sp? or could have a tear but he doubted it. He didnt notice anything and couldnt explain my pain to the extreme i was experiencing. Day 16 later in the morning, the come to get me to do exploratory surgery, this was after the Dr said he might do a spincterotomy on me as it could help but would only do it if necessary. Well i came out of surgery and was back in my hospital room waiting to hear from someone. In the meantime the Dr had seen my spouse and told her that he seen nothing and did nothing. * I know better as i felt different immediately* So the Dr said i could go home later that day. Well i got home and i had a large dressing on my butt area that was bloody and showed alot of signs of drainage. I thought to myseld, i thought he said he didnt do anything? I didnt bleed this much after my main PPH surgery. We day 18 came and i could finally have a bowel without crying. The baths became only 2 times a day. The Dr put me on morphine for meds but that still didnt help any pain. To this day i know the Dr fixed either something he missed or something that went wrong during the initial surgery but i could care less as i was feeling better. Well day 21 and im still off work. I have my good days and bad. Last night i couldnt sleep at all and was experiencing pain down my back and legs and groin. Who knows whats going on. I think i am going to take one more week off work and hope to resume activities. I still feel a ton of pressure even after a BM but figured thats the swelling. I take 3 advils every 6 hours for the swelling and have since quit taking the morphine meds. I can honestly say that this PPH surgery was and is hell. If you can and have lived with your hemmorids then DONT have a surgery. There is no point, im telling you! I will never go through this again and i had the worst case of roids the Dr had seen but i had lived 15 years with them and would still be doing so if i knew this PPH surgery would end up like this. So i can relate to all those who are in pain, depressed and want to give up. Keep your heads up, they tell me it will get better. In one week i go to see the original surgeon for my followup and back to work orders so wish me luck.

I had a hemarrhoidectomy last Wednesday (18 august). After leaving the hospital I felt absolutely nothing. I felt that I could return to work that afternoon. As the pain meds wore off the pain started to increase so I started taking codeine. After one day I found the nausia from the codeine was worse than the pain from the surgery. So I stopped taking the codeine, the pain was manageable. The worst part of the whole experience was having the first BM. That gauze that they shuve up your rectum is stuck in there with dried blood and tissues. I had my first BM after about 36 hours, what a relief! After that it's been pretty easy, a little bit of discomfort, but no major pain. Taking stool softener, laxative, prunes, prune juice, etc...so everything is liquid but pain is bearable. The sitz baths help alot for soothing the irritation and cleaning after a BM.
I started reading this blog before going for surgery and I was getting scared! Do I really want to go through with this or can I just live with the hemarrhoids? I have a high tollerence for pain, so this may have helped me endure. I did have a hernia surgery about 10 years ago and that was no more painful than the hemarrhoidectomy. I have no regrets about doing it and would do it again if the hemaroids returned.

I had two hemmoroids removed by laser and was stitched up. I can't begin to explain the amount of pain I was in the first three days. My doctor prescribed me vicodin, antibiotics pills, and antibiotic gel. The only thing he forgot to include was the stool softner. I realized that after my first bowel movement. All these meds and a warm/hot bath every four hours and when needed was the only way I survived the pain. The bath tub was the only tool that helped me to breathe. Anyway, Im on my nineth day still waiting for full recovery. Would I ever do this again? I dont know but I am happy their gone.

Hello All,
I just thought I'd do a follow up for readers. Today is October 15th and I had my surgery about 5 months ago on May 12th. It is a distant memory now and I was one of the lucky ones who had minimal pain. I had about 5 internal hemorrhoids removed via scalpel with stitches.
This was not a pleasant surgery and the recovery is slow...but for me it was life changing. I was out last week with a group of friends and we walked around about an hour and a half and I suddenly realized I could do it just like everyone else. In the past, I was looking for a bathroom every 10 minutes or so to make sure I wasn't bloody.
I'm sorry I waited so long to do it...and I wish any of my primary care doctors in the past who I discussed my problem with had suggested I to to a colorectal specialist to see about my problem. I suffered for many, many years for no good reason.
If you are suffering, go see someone and assess your options.

Hello All......
I am a 26 yr old male and I had my surgery for internal hemorrhoid removal back on September 14, 2010, and I must say the recovery process was the worst pain I have EVERRRRR experienced in my entire life. I mean down right unbearably excruciating, sooo bad that I had 2 be rushed 2 the hospital on an ambulance the next day after surgery, and after having my first bowel movement. That was over 3 months ago and since then, the recovery has slowly come a long well. Except 4 one thing! I still have not healed down there as of yet and I am still having large and large amounts of blood coming/pouring from my rectum. My doctor told me it could take 6 months for me 2 heal, but after 3 months u would think I would have seen some signs of healing tho....ya know? My doctor told me today on the phone that he is not sure if he can do anymore 4 me, since my tissue down there is real thin and anything going through my anal canal breaks it open! I started 2 cry after I got off the phone with him, since I don't wanna have 2 deal with this or have this 4 the rest of my life ya know? My question 2 anyone out there reading this is, will I EVER heal? :'(
P. S. Does anyone know of any herbal or natural remedies I could take 2 aid me/my internal body in the healing process? and........should I get a second opinion from another doctor at all either?

I had my surgery on Sept 13th 2010 and am all well and good and back to normal. If i were you i would go to another colorectal surgeon and have them examine you and see if there is anything they can do. This seems too long to take to heal, and to continually be bleeding all the time seems like theres another issue, maybe a fissure. Go somewhere else and let them see whats going on, so that you can rest assured you are healing. Are you using internal creams like proctosol?
Get it checked as soon as possible and let us know what they say.
Good luck.
