It's tough having a loved one die. It's even more difficult helping them die at home. My mother-in-law is now 0 to 48 hours away from death. She will die and that can not be change. She was in her home until her children could no longer handle the dying process. The breakdown was being unable to administer IV drugs, we could no longer get the oral drugs in her. There is a drug protocol to help humans die. And yes, a healthy 20 yo should not mix these drugs. But it is ok for end of life. It's the way it is accept it. Or you can administer N2, nitrogen.

I cared for my wife who was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic cancer , after a PET Scan / No hope for survival , maybe 6 months of life left. BONE cancer the most painful and worst. Dr. said time will come when nothing will stop the pain. 4 months and 7 days later the crisis came . I used the emergency kit ! we discussed the end and what she wanted before. I gave her the LORAZAPAM to knock her out and the Strongest morphine they brought, whenever I needed it. She woke up the Last day , TOLD ME SHE LOVED ME ! AND DIED AT 12:57PM SUNDAY FIRST DAY OF SPRING ON THE 4 MONTH 11 DAY. . IT STOPPED MY WIFES SUFFERING ! MY WIFE OF 41 YEARS ! AND I WOULD DO IT AGAIN. I don't want a fight, but my brother was mentally alert, his chronic pain was controlled, but one incident puts him in the hospital, and the doctor says "put him on hospice". I had two wonderful afternoons sitting with him, then his kids started to follow hospice's recommendation of morphine and lorazapam every two hours! He died three days later. Hospice tried to do the same with husband's mother years ago. I even said to hospice "why would you give her morpihine? She's having breathing issues", we fired them the next day, and mother lived for several years afterwards, spending quality time with her granddaughter. You can fire Hospice, BTW.
