I must say that for the past couple of years I have done nothing else than taking care of my parents. My mother suffered from stroke, which rendered her helpless and the father has heart issues. I am so afraid that something similar might happen to him too, since he strains himself a lot, both mentally and physically. I would like to know how many minutes we have before irreversible brain damage occurs? Can something be done in that period?

Well, I seriously doubt it, since it is something that will happen only couple of minutes after the stroke occurred and I don’t think you will have enough time to get him proper medical help. Stroke itself can be treated in the next three hours which is more than enough, but in that moment, the damage has already been done. So I guess you will have to start teaching him about stroke prevention.

Well , given that you got both parents at risk of a cardiovascular event or further stroke I would recommend you to take part in a CPR course. Which can give you some ideas of things you can do if somethings goes wrong as first aids.
After the course you may be interested to do also an advanced course. This will give you cofidence , skills and a sense of having the situation well under control. Something that almost recently has been added to the content of these courses is instruction to use AEDs or defibrillators which can be used by anyone who has done a CPR course.
The rational for having AEDs available is that in many cases the reason for death in somebody with heart problem is a kind of arrythmia called ventricular fibrillation. This is the time that having a defibrillator comes handy. You put the pads on and the machine talks you through steps . It is designed to be simple and fool proof. The only down side is their price which can be between $2000-5500 . But you may be able to convince the private cover to pay for this. Defibrillation is helpful only if it is done in the first minutes . So you can not rely on the ambulance for this. Just too late. I hope you find this helpful
