Does anyone know if iuds are affected by antibiotics?

Loading...

Well, not all IUDs are simply barrier methods, most of them, actually, like Mirena, are in fact hormonal methods of contraception. But, even when it comes to completely hormonal methods of contraception, like birth control pills, antibiotics rarely cause significant fall in effectiveness of hormonal contraception. Even in the cases when its recommended that women who are on hormonal birth control use additional protection, usually its when they are on penicillin type antibiotics - for most other, more frequently used antibiotics, there actually is no proof that they lower the effectiveness of hormonal birth control.
