My daughter had the Mirena inserted in 2009. She had numerous yeast, bacterial infections and treated with various antibiotics. aprx Nov 2013 maybe sooner she started complaining of a racing heart , numbness in upper extremities, upper back pain Feb 2014 while looking for her childrens school valentines she had an episode she described as " felt she was falling, legs wouldn't hold her up" which sent her into a panic. I told her to sit and get a candy bar or a coke until feeling resolved. She had to be picked up because she didn't think she could drive. She had never had psychological problems and because her symptoms mimic "Panic and Anxiety" attacks and every test done was inconclusive she has been labeled with Anxiety and put on antidepressants, antianxiety et... which none have resolved her symptoms permanently. She continues to have episodes of "feeling drunk" bobble , wobbly head, numbness in arms, hands and recently numbness / tingling in cheeks. She saw a Neurologist twice. The first appointment he gathered data and referred her to Optomitrist to have her optic nerve assessed. (She had one episode while driving during all this where she looked to her left,, looked to the right but was still seeing the objects on her left which sent her into a panic and forced her to pull off road- highway) We had her eyes checked and she did get new contacts and eye glasses (She has terrible vision and has since age 6) She is now 26. Her MRI of her head was normal. Ultrasounds /CT etc.. abd etc,, showed a Ovarian cyst (Next one no cyst) The second appointment with the neurologist , she was told "migraines" and wanted to start her on Imitrex, Depakote etc.. I was furious and expressed my concerns . Then he (neurologist) decided it must be panic attacks . I have been a nurse for 25 years and have lost faith in the medical profession She had her Mirena removed a year later (aprx 5 years post insertion) She continues to have vb and the OBGYN has pretty much thrown her hands up. My daughter noticed she first would get the "drunk" feeling, then noticed a vaginal odor and then would go to OBGYN. OBGYN kept telling her nothing was wrong. I finally called and told them to send out the lab which they did. That is when they started identifying bacteria. I feel she may have infection in her spine which has never resolved. I guess as long as she keeps taking happy pills and doesn't complain anymore the problem will be solved. I have thrown my hands up because it is like pulling teeth trying to test/dx procedures etc.. I believe all her symptoms are complications of long term infections caused by the Mirena.
