Gosh I so believe now it is the celexa. I gained 30 lbs and hope I get them off. Been off Celexa for two months now and nothing. My skin even hurt when I was on it. The weight gain is in the places everyone mentioned. I thought it was because of my age. Help!!!!!!!!!!

oh my gosh i cant believe it you are telling my life on celexa - i got divorced in 2003 at age 32 and had a physical at that time and weighed 125 my normal weight and my current doctor has in my charts. my doctor said at that time that i needed to get into a less stressful job and get less stress in my life. she suggested seeing a counselor who suggested i had adhd who put me on ritalin and celexa 20mg. now 5 years later i am so humiliaated to say i weigh 195 and pretty much eat the same lean cuisine diet lunch and dinner and raisan bran breakfast. i gained 70 lbs. they sent me for testing there is nothing wrong my thyroid or my metabolism. in fact they sent me to pulmonolgoist and i have sleep apanea. i got sent to another specialst on adhd and dont have it. so they took me off ritalin. i am now on provigil for sleep apanea and topamax for concentration but my psych wont take me off celexa until we finalize dose of topamax. if you are on celexa and you see your weight going up do what you can to get off - i changed nothing about my diet and gained a ton of weight - i even totally stopped drinking 6 months ago to see if that could take off weight something i did when i weighed 125 and very little budge. the topamax should help drop the lbs too but the celexa seems to be keeping the scale from moving. i cant wait for the day when i can finally stop celexa.

I am the exact same way. I didn't change how I ate or anything and have been tested for everything and nothings wrong. My doctor told me celexa doesn't have a weight gain side effect BS! You can look at me and see thats a lie. Even strong diet pills haven't taken a single pound off of me and I haven't been eating hardly anything. Before celexa I could drop 10 pounds easy :-(

I am 25 years old. II gained 25 lbs with celexa. In the begining i didn't notice that it's because of celexa..I stop taking it and i lost some weight. It's good for depression but gaining weight is also a depression. So i stopped taking it from March2008 and i lost 15 lbs in two months. I am not going to try this again. I told this to my doctor and she said weight gaining is not that bad as your depression. But without telling my doctor i stopped taking it.

Thank you , everyone, for sharing your stories here. I can't believe I'm on this medication for depression that is making me more depressed every day, because IT IS MAKING ME FAT. I have lowered my dose to only 10mg/day...stopping drinking, eat well and exercise. But when I try to stop completely, the side effects are awful (does anyone else get a "tweaky", metallic feeling in their head?). I may try the Road Back. I have to do something.

Thats what doctors don't understand weight gain only worsens depression. Mine still insists that gaining is not a side effect. Tell that to my new stretch marks buddy >;)

I have been off of celexa for 1 month and have not lost any weight. I have started exercising a being careful to eat only when I am hungry. A week ago I started taking the vitamins recommended by "The Road Back". I have taken SSRI's on and off during my life and each time I gain well over 50lbs. When will I start losing weight? I am more than ready!

I have been on Celexa for a year and haven't gained a pound. Maybe diet and exercise should be the blame and not the medication. It's funny how people love to blame anything they can for weight gain. Accept it. Your body changes people.

I have been on Celexa for 6 months and have gained 15 lbs!!! I was taking Lexapro before that for 2 years and had no weight gain. My doctor and I decided to try Celexa because they make a generic. I am weaning down on the Celexa and adding back the Lexapro starting today! It better work to start taking some of this weight off!!! I agree that I'm more depressed now than before any of the antidepressants because of the gain. My doctor said most of her patients do not gain the weight but she has had a few balloon, guess what? I am close to one of them!! Wish me good luck with my switch back. If something works don't change for your insurance company!!! :x :x

I am a 20 year old male and hav been on celexa for a little over 3 months. I have been a lifetime skinny person, weighing tops 175 for all my teen years. When i started celexa i was on 10mg and gained about 5-10 pounds but nothing that bothered me that much. I increased dossage to 40 mg about a month ago and now weigh 197 pounds!!! All the weight seems to be in the waist area. I am livid because i play sports and this extra weight is not helping. Any other suggestions for anti-depressants that wont make me gain 40 pounds?

Hi There,

I know completey how you all feel!!!! I was not on celexa, in fact, I was on Effexor XR, which apparently is very similar in composition to Celexa. I started the medication in 2004, and weighed 120 lbs. By 2007, I weighed 180 lbs. Madness!!!!! I have always been fairly slim by whole life. Once I started taking the medication my appetite increased somewhat, but I believe the real culprit was a big slow down in my metabolic rate. I couldn't understand where the weight gain was coming from, because if you look up the side effects for Effexor or Celexa weight gain is not listed! In fact they only mention a lack of appetite and nausea. After stumbling across a message board like this I found out that many people experience weight gain on almost all SSRIs and SNRIs. In addition, part of the weight gain conundrum is your own biochemistry, as I've known other people who are currently on Celexa and Effexor and have not experienced weight gain.

Now for losing the weight. I can say that 1.5 years after getting off the medication, my metabolism is back to normal and I'm at 125 lbs. HOWEVER once you stop the medication, the weight doesn't melt off they way you expect it to. I was so frustrated when I stopped and only saw a 5 lbs difference after being off the medication for 2 months. In order to lose the weight I had to exercise religiously and definitely modify my diet (including no carbs, sugars, or meat). Certainly there is no need for anyone to go to that extreme (I was just obsessed with losing the weight fast) but I really think you have to exercise and change your eating habits once you stop the meds. Plus, the endorphins released from exercising became like a natural anti-depressant, which was an added reinforcement. Just remember that the medication stays in your system for la week or two once you stop, I believe. But yes, losing the weight post medication can be done, as long as you're patient and persistent!

I've been on Celexa for 3 months and am so happy to have read all of your messages; I was beginning to think that something was wrong with me. I am 26 years old and when I first started taking Celexa, I didn't have much of an appetite...but now, I have terrible carb cravings, have lowered my caloric intake and am exercising and have still gained 15 pounds! The other day I was mortified when I split my pants getting into a car. I am back to my college weight, which is really depressing since I had worked so hard to get that off...

I'm definitely calling my doctor tomorrow!

I was on celexa for 8 years! I had a lot of depresion as a teen and in early twenties, so the doctors told me I had bipolar disorder and that I may have to take meds for lifetime. I do admit that there were times when I may have needed them, but that was when I was goigng through some tough times growing up. As I got older and more comfortable in my own skin, my depression went away, yet the doctors never wanted to take me off the meds. They said "Well lets keep you where you are at since you seem to be doing so well." I soon determined on my own that I did not need these medications and that I had no reson to be depressed. I stopped the celexa cold turkey! I had also gained weight at a steady 8 punds a year for the past 3 years. You do not need meds unless you are going through a crises and cannot function daily.
I had horrible withraw symptoms for about three weeks and then they subsided. These symptoms included: stomach bloating and cramps, chills and sweating, loss of sleep, headache, filling ill, changes in menstrual cycle (late period), increased nervousness and irritaton. I had none of these shocks to the brain that people claim...my brain feels completely fine. These symptoms all went away and now I feel better than ever. I am smarter and more alert. I feel my emotions and deal with them! You can do it too. Don't be a fool because this stuff is not good for you, and the weight will come off slowly just like you gained it slowly. Not too mention you are paying the psychiatrist a lot!
Good Luck and God Bless
