Hi. I have an 12-year-old daughter that has been recently diagnosed with Osgood-Schlatter's disease. She is in extreme pain but has been told only to rest and that there is no need for treatment of any kind. Not even the painkillers!!! That is really strange for me!! Are the doctors correct??? Is there anything I can do to help her? Should se be treated??

I can only imagine how does it feel for her. I mean, kids of her age should be out playing and hanging around with their friends and not resting at home!! But, unfortunately, this condition typically occurs at puberty and is thought to be due to physical activity causing microscopic trauma at the top of the shin bone which may become swollen and painful. That is why there is no treatment for this state apart from resting and any activities such as running, jumping and kneeling will only increase the pain. Therefore, doctors were correct – the best thing wor her is to rest. On the other hand, you should give her some “weaker” painkillers to ease pain, but only in the most severe cases – the pain will disappear by itself in few days.
