I have been on Norco 10/325 for about a year or so due to chronic pain....supposedly fibromyalgia. It definitely helped my daily pain. I am wondering though if my pain, which seems much more intense than before taking any opiate, is as bad as it is due to the in between dose withdrawal, or is my pain really that bad. I guess I have forgotten.
I would like to get off the norco and see just how my pain really is. I keep thinking I made this bed of mine and now have to lie in it. I only take my pain killer when my body is telling me it needs it. If I am having a good day pain wise, then I don't even think about reaching for a pain killer. I read that people start withdrawing within hours of their last pill. That doesn't sound like me, so it makes me wonder how dependent I really am...do I really need it...or is my pain from the rebounding of thinking I need more.
I take about 8 norco a day. Yes, I started with much less in the beginning, but tolerance brought me to needing the 8 or so a day. I have been using meds for a good year now. I want to stop taking them and have an opportunity to do so as I will be out of work for 3 weeks as of Jan 16th due to a knee surgery. I figure this is a good time to test the waters on getting off the opiate...nothing I would love more to do.
I am curious as to the approximate time frame of withdrawal effects once I stop taking them. I am expecting to feel flu-like and pretty miserable at that....but is there anyone reading this that has a more detailed time line of effects I will feel so I know I am moving along normally in my quest to detox myself at home.
More than anything I need to know...the issue of pain is my biggest question. I do know that I will feel intense pain during the detox...and I am hoping someone can tell me approximately how long that pain lasted (days/weeks) so I may have a better idea of whether or not I am feeling this pain from withdrawal, or have stepped over to now feeling the pain from the fibromyalgia. I have wondered for quite some time now how much of my intense pain is from a rebound (worse pain than before you started taking the drug?). You forget after a while just what you were feeling prior to being introduced to this wonderful (insert sarcasm here) drug.
Can anyone relate to my questions and kinda give me a rundown of what to expect during this time? How long does the extreme pain last once you are off the opiates? Is it days or weeks? I only have 3 weeks out of work coming up to get myself off the norco. I don't know when I will find another 3 weeks off work to try this again, so I am going to give it my best shot now.
Besides pain....maybe you can tell me about other things I will be feeling......nausea (how long?) and so on. It would just be helpful to know what to expect and approximately how long I may be dealing with it. I am doing this on my own.....and wonder if there is anything my doc can prescribe me to possibly make it a tad easier. Maybe anti-nausea meds, maybe this clonidine I read about people taking and so on.
Any help would be appreciated.
Sorry this was so long. I am quite chatty and can't seem to write a short post to save my life.

I think it is different for every person, which is why you can't find a strict list of withdrawal symptoms. I know how you feel about wanting to stop in order to reevaluate the pain and I have done this a few times (with Fentanyl, Morhpine, Hydrocodone and Suboxone).
There is a lot of talk about hyrdocodone addiction and withdrawal these days, but I think its overblown and mostly mental -- but that's just my opinion. For me the only withdrawal I get from hydrocodone is a cough and, of course, increased pain. The increase is pain is not just because the pain is unmasked, it seems like the pain is markedly increased for a few days. Basically the withdrawal for me lasts under a week and is nothing at all to worry about compared to the other opiates.

So what I hope to be reading here is everyone is different (knew that :-) and I may be hearing the worst case scenerios.....and that you had no problem and was fine in under a week? Gotta love your reply. I needed a touch of optimism, as I was thinking 2 weeks easily to feel even remotely better. I won't get cocky and think this will be a breeze though...keeping my eyes open for possibilities.
I don't think mental will be a problem with me, as I really don't like it very much and love days that I do not need as much.
I am surely concerned about the pain and am hoping I won't just shrug things off and take a pill, telling myself "Hey, you are in legitimate pain". I don't expect (although I wish I would) to quit the pk's...but I would like to wean down to 5 a day. Plus I am afraid of how bad the nausea will be.....how long will my stomach be upset.
Thanks so much for your reply.

I've tapered down in the last two days from six to three a day and am just now beginning to get the itchy throught/cough and I bet it will go away by tomorrow. If the cough gets heavy I will take Tussin pearls to get rid of the cough, but I'm not worried at all. I do not expect any stomach problems, the shakes, chills, appetite loss or any pyschological effects, which are common with "stonger" opiates. I know you were probably taking more than me per day, but I bet you'll be fine too.
PS stay away from Fentanyl! 8-|

You might consider a different pain med. For example I had very little detox symptoms from Demorol. I am facing Norco detox due to back surgery two months ago. Need to get off them this week due to no health ins.
Also, you might try (if you are able) Physical Therapy and Tylenol... sounds weak, I know. But there is definitely something to be said for getting blood flowing through those areas where you are experiencing pain.
God Bless, and be strong.

I have never taken the pain pills you have, but I also have Fibromyalgia and my old Doctor had me on 180 vicodon a month. Which I got immune to and you might to over time. There are other medicines just for that. I would maybe get a second opinion. My first Dr. had no idea and I was just his ginny pig. I take cymbalta, neurontin, zoloft, and requip for restless legs at nite, depression is a major factor with this illness. I got addicted to those vicodon, and now I only want 30 a month for my really bad days. That addiction took me alot to get over and fight. It did damage to me and my family. I hope any of this helped. Good luck.

You need to wing yourself off. Take one less pill per day until your down to only taking 2 a day. Then you can go cold turkey. The first 3 days are the worst. t takes 10 days before you can sleep good. Not that bad. Pain will decrese and you will feel free again. Do not have any pills in the house after you go cold turkey. Do not call and refill your pills after you start cold turkey.

Get Tramadol (Ultram). This is a non-narcotic pain killer that does an EXCELLANT job at relieving withdrawal symptoms.

Ultram ( Tramadol ) IS an opiate based pain reliever. Don't kid yourself. When I took that for about five days, I felt horrible after stopping it. I will never touch that c**p again.

wow 240 a month I only had 180 to live on.I haven't been on these as long as you, perhaps 3 yrs.Was prescribed 6 a day but due to my addictive nature and work elements I took up to 16 a day. Norcos. I was constantly calling my pain DR. a week early. My additude while on them is not too grand. Thanks to Norcos after running out early on my job while out of town, I wigged out on the project in front of co workers and got forced to resign. I am going to try the Imodium method I've read about. With drawls off this is not funny I've experianced a little. God Bless your efforts and Good Luck.

Kittyluvr400.Have you been tested for Lyme Disease? I have been doing a little research on my own and a lot of people have symptoms of Fibromyalgia, CFS, thyroid issues etc.. when they actually have Lyme disease.. There are NOT very good test available to confirm or deny whether or not people have it. Often the test they give are False Negatives..and I really think a lot of my pain and symptoms could be from LD.. I wish enough people would contact their Doctors and with enough insistent inquiries maybe they will invest in proper testing to diagnose this often undiagnosed disease.. and allow the proper antibiotic treatment( 8-16 months) to cure it instead of pumping narcotics into people..
