Narcotics are strong prescription painkillers that relieve pain by preventing transmission of pain messages to the brain. They are habit forming if taken for too long. Stimulants are used therapeutically to increase alertness or as recreational drugs. They can be also used as appetite suppressants and for boosting productivity. Alcoholism is a chronic disorder in which the patient depends on alcohol and is debilitated by cravings. Alcoholics have trouble functioning socially and vocationally. Alcoholism can be fatal, and has a huge impact on patients’ families. Nicotine is an addictive drug used in tobacco. It is extremely toxic and causing damage to the lung tissues, constriction of blood vessels, increases blood pressure and heart rate and stimulates central nervous system. Sedatives (depressants) are drugs that that suppress the central nervous system, causing the body to slow down and relax, relieving anxiety and producing sleep. The most commonly used/abused are barbiturates (Amytal, Nembutal, Seconal, phenobarbital) and benzodiazepines (Ativan, Halcion, Librium, Valium, Xanax, Rohypnol) but also chloral hydrate, glutethimide (Doriden), methaqualone and meprobamate.
