I had my hemmoroidectomy 2 weeks ago & at my 1 week post op the Dr. said I had a thrombosed roid that had to be removed right there. I thought WTF I just went through surgery last Tuesday why did you not remove everything then. She said she left the three little ones & only took the two large. Anyways, there I sat in the office she stuck me with a freaken needle four times that hurt like living HELL then cut away. I am back to square one with healing but now have a funny odor & still have the leakage with blood. & It hurts every time I go # 2 basically I sit frozen in horrid pain while the throbing & spasm calm down. I am suppose to go back to work Monday & I have no idea how in the world I am going to do this in the condition Is the ODOR & LEAKAGE normal? How long does the healing take??? & Why does it feel like I have rips or needles constantly stabbing me? She cauterized the area after the second surgery (in office) When I had the main surgery on March 17, 2009 I recall she stated she used the harmonic scapel to do the job.. She said it would be a faster recovery & would not hurt as much & they cauterized then as well.
I am so affraid to even get close to my husband this is so freaken horrible, imbarrassing & the most unbearable pain I have ever been in & I have had two children natural childbirth 21 hour labor & other surgery's nothing compares to this.
I can't even think of having sex again with my husband.
Please someone help??

I had 4 removed on 2/26/09 and it took me about two weeks to even start feeling a little better. The odor, leaking, and bleeding is normal from my experience. There is no way you will be able to go back to work that soon. I would go to your doctor and have him/her give you a note to get out of work for at least another week depending on what you do for another week. It's be 4 weeks since my surgery and I am just now having BM's without any pain, but it still doesn't feel like it used to. After you have a BM wet the toilet paper in warm water and pat yourself clean. Then take a pain pill and take a bath in as hot of water as you can stand. It worked wonders for me. A lot of times when I went # 2 it felt like I only got about half of it out. So I had to have my wife give me a warm water enema and it helped release the rest of the fecal matter. It's a very humbling experience but well worth it. I basically lived in my bathtub for the first two weeks because it was the only thing that made the pain bareable.
Hope you feel better soon.

I had 3 thrombosed hems removed on 10/31/08. Obviously because I am still referring to this website I am still plagued by the aftereffects of the whole thing. I believe the hem surgery site has finally healed but I now have an anal fissure. I will take the anal fissure though any day over the thrombosed hems.
Based on my experience, I recommend a couple of things to help you through the recovery period.
Try Metamucil powder mixed in tall glass of water once a day.
Try to walk as much as you are able, it gets your bowels moving
Try to drink at least 6 glasses of water every day
Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and stay away from spicy food and red meats
Take a sitz bath after every bowel movement in hot water
Ibuprofen does wonders for the severe tightening you mention- you can take as much as 600mg 4 times a day. It is worth it.
I also had two children by natural childbirth and the hem recovery was so much more painful than anything related to the childbirth. Thank goodness my husband was very considerate and never said anything about the odor, leakage and all the pain I went through after hem surgery.
I can say that I am happy I went through with the hem surgery now because I was miserable for 10 years on and off with the complications of hemmorhoids. It took 3 1/2 months to feel ok going #2, so don't despair, your body does heal, just watch what you eat, drink and try to walk.
Hope this helps. good luck.

As the others have said, yes it is normal to have bleeding, discharge, and the smell. I had my operation on 3/4/09 and at this point the bleeding has almost stopped completely, but I still have a little discharge. How much seems to depend on how active I am. After a month Im wondering when that will go away, but I still have some swelling so the doctor is just watching it slowly go down. If it doesnt completely or the problem becomes worse I will have to have a second surgery. The surgeon removed all the thrombosed roids that I had, but there was still other swelling and thats whats left. He just couldnt cut out that much at one time.
Lay in the bathtub in really hot water after every bowel movement and I would say twice a day in general. I still do it even after a month. The surgeon had said I am reducing the chance of getting another thrombosed hemorrhoid before Im healed by continuing to take the baths.
Buy Motrin for the Ibuprofin. I took that along with my Percocet, and still take the Motrin depending on how I feel.

I had this surgery also and it took me about 5 months to completely recover. I remember having similar pain. Now, 3 years later I have the same hygenic problems after each bowel movement. My only option at this point is to take a shower right after. Feminine wipes are a must in my purse and bathroom but I still have issues hours after. It's embarassing but I'm not going to the doctor again for this issue. They didn't even remove them, just tucked them in a and stapled them against the wall. Horrible for anyone to experience. Worse than childbirth!

I had the an open hemorrhoidectomy with a subcutaneous suture on April 16. The pain after the post op described in this website is very much true. I had 8 piles and only 4 were removed as the doc was preventing anal stenois or the narrowing of anal canal. The piles left are a bit outside and this pains and stings all the time. Bearable though. Doc said it will regress in due course. I guess healing do take a lot of time for this surgery. Sitz bath is a lot of help for pain. I was given ciprobay (brand name here in saudi arabia) for the foul smelling leakage and it did work wonder. I still have some leakage (minimal) on my 3rd day of taking this drug. Yes, ibuprofen is good for pain instead of the voltaren given to me as this triggers my rhinitic allergy. It hurts right down to the anal region when sneezing and coughing due to my allergy.
Anyone out here who had the same sit as mine. I mean piles that were left after the surgery and did regress over time?
Thanks!

I had hemorrhoidectomy surgery on 8th sept removing about 4 hemorrhoids (still have some left) three weeks ago and returned to work on the 10th sept. I had discomfort but was very very painfully going number two have never felt nothing like it. But what I use is instillagel which is a local ansesthetic and disinfectant. Which made the whole area numb all I can feel is swelling there, which makes live bearable.

How does that work for you? Where did you pick up the instillagel? I'd like to hear more about it if you have information. Thank you!

Today is my 6th day post op, i had 3 and 4 dgree trombosed H, i jave this since i was 14 and the doc then told me to remove it when i get pregnant and have childbirth. I never got married until now and my H turned worst for the past 5 months. So i asked my sister (nurse) to find me the best surgeon and had a schedule. Today i still have the pain during BM and have that foul odor, i check it out with my cam and found a nasty peeling of skin, my sis told me its satarting to heal. I don't really go sitz bath and don't have a tub. But i use Faktu ointment every after BM and whenever i want. Also when i had my 1st BM(which was the worst pain ever, even with soft stool) i used 5mm Nubain, took me minutes of pain and was gone instantly. Also i choosed to stay in the hospital for 4 days, i plan not to come home until my 1st BM (3rd day post op) to make sure i get the best pain killer as i have read here and most of comments that it would be very painfull. My position during BM is squat like and put all the pressure in my toes. I dont sit on the bowl as it give more pressure and pain, i also poop half standing position. I just had my 3rd BM since post op and could walk a little and back to bed to relax everything. My sis is also around to give me shots of nubain (we got from the hospital) if needed, but i actualy did not use any since i could handle the pain now. Be back with my doc tomorrow for a followup. I think for this king of op, we really should reasearch the best doc around.

I had my surgery last Tues. The surgeon banned three internal and cut three external leaving open wounds and sent me home with no stool softners or pain meds. I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE IN AGONY!! Never in my life have I felt such excruciating pain. I live in the tub, It is such a terrible experience. One of the worst surgery out there. I too have the horrible leakage and I am so embarrassed of it. My butt may never heal as im in the shower everytime i leak and get the horrid smell. My God...what have I done to myself? Im wondering if I should have ever went and had this surgery. Im so upset and emotionally exhausted. My heart truly goes out to all of you who've had this done as well. Im right there with you. Hugs

Hello,
I know you posted this over a year ago but please give me some hope. A week post op and horrible smell and leakage as you've stated. Can you remember how long it took to stop smelling? So embarrassing and upsetting. Please give me some good news to make me feel this will be worth it some day...

I had surgery on the 12th. I am now 9 days post op. I ask my NP friend about the smell and leakage. My glutes were so extremely swollen that the surgical area was smothered. I have been taking 2-4x4 gauze pads, rolling them up, and placing them in between my glutes in an attempt to get some air to decrease the moisture. I feel this helps more each day to decrease the leakage but the odor is taking a bit longer to be gone.

Hello, im new to this, i had hemorrhoidectomy surgery, and im about almost 3 weeks in recovery, the pain is goe during bm, but i have minor blood leak, and some yellow liquid that gives a foul smell, i have to pay my ass like every 2 to 3 hours with tissue for that and boy does it smell bad. I still have 3 piles left, they said they couldnt remove it all bec. If they did, id lose control of my bm, thats what they said, and right now, the 3 piles that were left are still showing out of my butt chicks even when im standing straight. They said the meds, would get it down, if 2 months passed and it the meds. Wont work, they said ill need a second surgery to remove the rest (honestly i want it all removed, looking at my ass where is sticks out is very depressing for me, what more if i have a wife or gf, its like the god damn thing took away my pride as a man and im very depressed just looking at it) so when i stand it wouldnt stick out my butt chicks anymore. Im having troubles sitting down, its not that its very painful, the pain is manageable but its annoying i can feel the lump, and i cant sit for like an hour straight.
Guys.... I need you.... :(
