Hi
My surgeon told me "they were the worst she had ever seen" i was astounded by that considering i was a lot younger than her other patients. Most of the cutting was inside, but it felt as though the stitches were half way up my butt crack, (sorry for the graphic). there were some just outside because i could feel them.
You are doing great by the sound of it. its the throbbing after the bm that drove me crazy, hence the use of the hot water bottle.

Thanks. Glad to hear that you're doing so well 2 years on and also really appreciate your time answering questions for people who are just going through it. As you know, places like this are so helpful as only the people on here can understand what the entire hem story is like!

Okay, so just had this mornings bms and whilst still painful, they're a little less painful than yesterday :) Don't think I've got the level of stool softener right just yet as first bm as nice and soft, but second bm was more solid and not as easy to pass, so going to tweak that today. Now lying with the hot water little to see if that will help relieve some of that post bm pain.
I do hate waking in the morning as I know that's when I have my bms - and always 2-3 :( Once my bottom has recovered from the trauma of them, then I feel quite normal. Afternoons and evenings are fine, but I'm not going to risk putting any pressure on the wounds - they still need to heal, so its rest, rest and more rest for me. Fortunately my husband and children are wonderful and supportive :) I think that really helps too as recovering from any surgery can be a depressing thing to do.
Heat from hot water bottle feels nice and is definitely helping with the post bm sting so will keep this up :)

Oh, what a morning! 4 bms later and I've now got a very sore bottom! Feel worse than yesterday, but not as bad as 2 days ago. Am learning that its really important to get the level of stool softener right. Things were very loose to start with to the extent that I didn't make it a couple of times. Now I think I've cut back too much, so going for a half dose now and praying that tomorrow morning will be better. I'll be 1 week post op tomorrow. Not sure if anyone is reading my ramblings, but I do know that writing in here takes my mind of my bum a bit, being that can only be a good thing right?

Hi i know they told you not to bathe etc. Do you jump in the bath after bms' or use a sitz bath directly afterwards? if not try it at this point! EVen if you only have a a large bowl fill it with salty hot water, (as hot as you can stand), and dunk your butt in it as soon as you are done, after every bm. You;ll be surprised how much it will help too.
This is the best place for rambling believe me we know how it feels!

Hello! I did have a bath today after the 3rd bm, but not sure if I felt a whole lot of relief, but that might have been because bm 4 was knocking at the door! Had bm 4, took some more pain killers and fell asleep with hot water bottle on my bum. Have just woken up and feel drained, but not in a lot of pain any more :) As for sitz baths, you can't even buy them in the UK, believe it or not! Well, you can get them on amazon and eBay - but only from sellers in America. They're just not used here, or they're called a different name and I don't know what that is. The closest thing you can get here is a portable bidet, which I have, but its got a built in soap dish at one end and a pointed bit at the other end for pouring the water out of and really not very comfortable to try and sit in - I've tried before. I've got a jug by the sink and use that to pour hot water over my bum as I'm having a bm and afterwards. That seems to help, but I'll also send my husband to the shop to see if he can find a big bowl to sit in. Fortunately I'm a small build, so that should help lol! I think the main problem today was that things weren't soft enough. I'm aiming for toothpaste and instead had soft modelling clay. Still, no bleeding today, so that's got to be a good sign, right?

Well it seems like a lot of work, the good thing aboutthe sitz bath it sits on the toilet so its convenient. The jug is a great idea, so i would stick with that. At this point, just to ease the throbbing after bm's the bowl or jug would work.
whatever works for you, thats all i know is that i had to put my bum in that hot water as soon as i was done to ease the pain, and as soon as the bath was run i would lie in there. I was like a mermaid for two weeks. i must have had the cleanest butt in north America.
They use the sitz bath here after you have ahd a baby too, to help with pain and healing, so it makes sense to use after hemarroidectomy too.
Maybe I will start selling Sitz baths in the uk!

Somebody should as I found a few UK operation recovery websites who recommend a sitz bath if you can find one. I wonder why they haven't made their way over here yet - virtually everything else has! Will keep going with the jug, a bath once they're all over and the hot water bottle. I was like a mermaid after my 2 births (which were the cause of the dreaded hems) having constant salt water baths to help heal and keep the stitches soft. Problem is with hemorrhoidectomies in the UK, is that they don't stitch - they just leave open to heal naturally. I think that's why we are told not to bathe and to try and keep the area dry. I'd love a couple of stitches in the external cut, at least that way I could understand more how it would close and heal. I think things are looking better with the cut, but know that it will take a while to heal. It's not that bit which hurts though, its the internal wound after a bm - as you know.
What did you eat while you were recovering? I'm 'living' on porridge, melon, vegetable soup and a slice or 2 of wholemeal bread (bread with fibre - dk if its called the same thing over there?). I've lost 7lbs already and only weighed 108 to start with! Love my food and want to eat more, but its the fear of what will come out at the other end! Once I've got my stool softener sorted I was thinking of maybe a light vegetable stir fry or something like that? Any suggestions would be welcome :)

Fruit and fiber cereal, sliced tomatoes (loved them), Whole wheat toast, fruit , cauliflower. I am a brit, moved here 17 years ago, so love sliced tomatoes on toast, they worked well. They do not recommend it but i drank mineral oil one day, its pretty revolting, its just like drinking cooking oil but clear. It worked great though, no pain at all. Well stitches and swelling felt like my butt was sewn shut, the anxiety was the worst. when you know its coming, i would be sweating at pacing like a mental case, in total panic because of the tearing sensation, i ripped the stitches, because i looked . I left it and it healed up fine.
anything with fruit and vegetables will be fine. Enjoy! Have you been out, I was going stir crazy so i went to the supermarket, but could only manage 30 mins before throbbing started again. (that was after a week though). I am a pusher though, pushed myself to walk, i set my goal that i would be in work 14 days later, and i got there.

Hello to a fellow brit :) I can't eat tomatoes at the moment as they make my bms to acidic which burns and that's the last thing I want! I'd happily have beans on toast as I know they keep me regular and soft, but again, want to avoid the tomato sauce. Just had am evening bm which is unusual for me, but pleased to say it wasn't too painful. Will see what tomorrow brings and if its better than today then I'll try a vegetable stir fry.
Haven't been out yet as don't have the strength. I have a fast metabolism and get faint when I don't eat enough normally, so on the amount I'm eating now and the weight I've lost, its taking all my strength to just get between rooms! That will improve though. Work wise, my husband and I have our own business and right now is our down time so he's managing it without any problem which is good. We do have a trade show on 21st October, so my aim is to be recovered and back to strength for that. It's building up that stamina and strength again after a period of illness or convalescence that takes time too. Am really looking forward to just getting back to normal, and hopeful the next week ahead will move me towards that :)

Well, another morning and another trip to the gates of hell. On a positive, I now feel like I'm only going to the gates and not all the way in to hell!!! 2 bms so far but feel there is more to come :( so lying with my hot water bottle on my bum until then. Taken first dose of paracetamol and will take some ibuprofen in a couple of hours just to help with the morning pain. If my daily pattern follows, then I'll feel fine at about 2pm once my bum has recovered from the morning bm assault!
Isn't technology wonderful though? Thanks to the internet and my phone, I'm able to lie in bed and connect with other people who truly understand what this is like, can offer advice, words of hope etc. Can you imagine how lonely it must have been for those people that went through this pre technology? Even just typing away on here takes focus away from my bum a bit while I wait for the post bm sting to subside.

Well, the morning is nearly over and bms still not how I'd like them. Still too solid and taking at least 5 bms to get everything out (no pushing!). Need them to be softer and looser so things 'flow' better, so going to try a bit more tweaking with the softeners, laxatives etc that the hospital gave me. Oh, to just go to the toilet normally again! I know it will come, but can't be soon enough.
Someone posted on another thread that if it feels like passing glass then it could be sign of a fissure! I hope not! Got enough to deal with getting over this without adding a fissure to the problems. Surely its bound to hurt when a bm goes past an open/healing wound?

Well, I've just washed my hair for the first time in a week! Gross, I know, but its long hair and I just haven't had the energy for it. Am going to see my family Dr this afternoon to have my wound checked over just to make sure everything is going as it should be. The surgeon I chose for my op is 2.5 hours away, so won't be seeing him until week 4, unless I want to see him sooner. I think it will be nice to have reassurance at this stage that all is looking good - at least, I hope that's what my Dr says!

Back from seeing my doctor and have a small infection which was what I was worried about. Good thing is that its been caught early, so hopefully the antibiotics will kill it off quickly so I can carry on healing.
Feel totally exhausted after my trip out. My bum felt really odd - like I needed a bm, but didn't. Guess its the combination of swelling and gravity! So for now, I think I'll remain horizontal.
