Wow I am so glad I have read these comments. I had injection 2 weeks ago and haven't had a period for 12 months! Quite scary reading comments on here but it all seems we are all in the same boat. Cramps and normal bleeding as if I am on a normal period. Would love to see what the outcome to this matter is.? I will go and see my G.P tomorrow but feel better just reading some of the comments on here ?

God don't you love the Internet? I had a second cortisone injection in my shoulder Thursday I had previously had a pink face and a very small. Nose bleed but was unprepared to have a dark period! I am 6 years post menopause and of course was scared silly by the first response on a Google search for post menopausal bleeding. This has given me hope and I will go and get checked out but as it's the weekend will sleep a little better for this article and all the helpful comments.

That should have been 25 years after menopause.

I am several years into menopause. I had a shot of kenalog in my thumb for arthritis at the end of December and started spotting/bleeding a few days later. That was on January 1st. I have now been bleeding for 3 1/2 Months (I bleed for 5 days straight, stop for 8 days, then it starts all over again.) I have done the ultrasound and the biopsy--all coming back normal. At wits end--do not know how to get bleeding to stop. I am on hormone replacement therapy--switched from progesterone cream to synthetic pill--didn't help. Does anyone know what I can do to get the bleeding to stop? Doctors are all at a loss.

I received cortisone injections in both knees for severe arthritis. I am 61. 8 days after the shots, I started light spotting. I had cramps. I am now finishing day 6 of what has turned out to be an actual period. It is light thankfully, and the cramps have subsided today. I am hoping it will all end soon. I had not had a period in over 7 years. I had some spotting 3 years ago, without cramps. Tests done by my GYN showed that I had fibroids, so I had what she termed "a chemical D & C": I had 3 rounds of oral progesterone in order to flush the fibroids out. A vaginal ultrasound at the end showed I was free and clear. The spotting that started 8 days after my cortisone injections had accompanying cramping, plus the color and amount was not the same as when I had the fibroids. I did some Internet searching, and found patient reports here, and a couple of other places, that indicated the steroid injections have caused the spotting, cramps, period, and even a hot flashes. I have contacted my ORTHO to see if this is a side effect. I was told that their office had not had any patient reports of this, but the nurse practitioner said she 'has heard of it happening.' Come on, doctors! I did find one study, done in the Netherlands, that conclusively showed a relation between cortisone injections and post menopausal bleeding.  My guess is it isn't the only study that has been done. This is all sounding like a racket/conspiracy to me. The shots have helped, but they are no magic cure. I am in deep doubt that I will have shots again.

April 12 of 2016 had a cortisone shot in my left knee. On April 28 I started a period after having my last period 7 Years ago. ThIS period ended May 8, followed by spotting 7days later. My gyno has scheduled lab work, ultrasound and a DNC. I ASKED HER about the connection between the shot and the on set of menses. She neither confirmed nor denied the possibility. Pap smear came back clear. Since there have been no clinical trials in relationship to this coincidence physicians need to do their due diligence for liability reasons. I just wish the orthopod would have warned me. It would have saved my anxiety and my time. My gyno is 79 and has been practicing in our community for 45 Years would be my guess. I have every confidence in her. Sharp as a tack.

I can't believe that all the ortho docs involved here are "unaware" of the connection between cortisone shots and post-menopausal bleeding. Collectively, they seem to present a solid & unified wall of silence and/or ignorance. Very strange. Not sure why this should be? I'm therefore now very suspicious of their reactions to our questions/concerns. What on earth is going on here?

My story is similar to all of yours. I am 62 and 12 years post menopausal with no unusual bleeding. Five weeks ago I had a cortisone injection in my shoulder. I had an earlier one about 4 months before with no bleeding, but two weeks after the second injection, I had a 'period' (including cramps). It was less flow than usual but lasted the usual 5-6 days. The U/S was clear & the gynae felt that there was no cause for concern. When I talked to the Muscular Skeletal specialist who ordered the cortisone, he said that he had seen this happen before. It's vital to have any bleeding checked out, but in the waiting time, I hope that gives someone a sense of peace that it happened to other women also.

Hurricanevicki wondering how your story turned out. Im 65 and had a shot in the knee and hot flashes, pain left side, and vaginal bleeding started. Like everyone here I panicked and have already had a urine test and ultrasound both clear. Doctor wants to follow up with more tests but now I want to wait after reading this site. He also said it couldn't be from the injection.

Thanks......myself as well after all the other posts from these women...postmenopausal for 2 1/2 years. Two cortisone shots to shoulder, two weeks post, started light to moderate spotting. Called the GYN, and I mentioned I thought about looking to see if there was relation to cortisone and he said no.....I started to freak out, because he said the bleeding was abnormal and need to do a bunch of tests Ned biopsies, but still going to go through with it since now I could never feel at ease unless I have a benign diagnosis.....all these posts from you all do give hope and encouragement that my diagnosis will be ok.
