I am 55 yrs old and also had a cortisone shot in my hip three weeks ago.  I just had my yearly Pap appointment on Thursday and started bleeding on friday.   I am 8 yrs post memnpausal and this stinks!  I loved not having a cycle and buying all the pads and tampons.   I guess cortisone can really mess up things in your body.  I am also a type II diabetic and cortisone has sent my glucose levels to the roof!! and I can't get things under control.    I will never get another CORTISONE shot again!

I am so glad to see this. I, too am a breast cancer survivor and had the exact same thing happen to me as you write. I just had this shot on 5/26/12 and started spotting one week later. Going to doc on tomorrow which is 5/29/12 but believe it is from steroid shot. Will gladly go through tests to be sure but believe it is from the injection.

Hi Ladies ,
Well my biopsy came back ok ish ......I am lucky enough to have access to my medical records its something my G.P. has set up for all the patients and is promoting it as much as he can . I have come across a letter from the hospital to him and dont understand the jargon something about occasional epthelial strips and also abundant Eosinhphylic and no atypia so dont understand a word of that so when i find out i will post back on here .

Yes, my doctor did an endometrial biopsy. In my case, endometrial cancer showed up. I had a complete hysterectomy done laproscopically. Results showed no other cancer present and 21 lymph nodes were clear. I was very lucky and I'm sure the initial bleeding was from the cortisone shot I received, but it also saved my life. My gyn said I would have bled eventually, but when? My cancer would have been farther along and might have spread. Ladies, please check this out fully with your gyn, it could save your life!

This is very interesting! I'm about 15 months post menopause and had a cortisone injection 1 1/2 weeks ago in my foot for pain. A period started the following week with cramps , bloating , etc. not heavy but definetly more than spotting. Called my gyn who is sending me for an ultrasound as the first step. I did have some endometrial hyperplasia 2 yrs ago that was treated with progesterone so I am anxious to get it checked out but maybe this is all due to the shot - thanks for the info!

Hi yes I agree I think the link between cortisone and menopausal bleeding really does need to be researched. But also if ladies of a certain age need cortisone injections for painful conditions is there a suitable alternative treatment ?

My biopsy showed no cancer and about two weeks after the bleeding stopped, I spotted for a few days. I had an ultrasound today but feel it is all from the steroid shot. No more for me.

The exact same thing happened to me as Mary Crowell-Dorr stated.

Sadly it's true... it's one of the side effects that women have to endure is the bleeding. I have had several injections and this has been the pattern.

Yes, my doctor insisted on the endometrial biopsy and you should insist on it also. My bleeding didn't last too long and it was more a spotting thing than anything else. As you can see by my post, I was diagnosed with Stage 1 Endometrial Cancer and I had a laproscopic hysterectomy and everything turned out fine. I had my three month checkup in August and everything was okay. Please check it out fully, especially since you have already has breast cancer. Good luck to you and may God bless you!

Annao,

My situation is similar to yours as I also had been past menopause about 18 months when I had bleeding. I've had endometrial hyperplasia and ovarian cysts and was treated with all the popular progesterone meds.

I had pain especially on the left side for years prior to my late menopause, which finally arrived at 57 years old.

5 weeks following a steroid shot in my shoulder I too, started bleeding, which lasted 8 days along with ovarian pain in front and back.

My endo biopsy and TVS turned up negative, but I still have left ovarian pain. My gyno was skeptical its anything to do with my ovaries, and suggested I get a colonoscopy first before proceeding with a CAT for the ovaries.

I'm still concerned that my ovary is not healthy. Very frustrating.

If anyone out there has any input, please share your story. Thanks!!

No more steroids for me!
