I've had a more and more intense gag reflex for going on maybe 2 years. It's to the point is negatively impacting my daily life. I smell certain things and gag, I eat a little too much, I gag. I have a beer, I gag. After sex, I gag. When I say gag, I mean repetitive over and over in a very embarrassing way. It makes me feel physically sick to my stomach when I gag like this and I often vomit as a result. Sometime there is no reason. I can be laying on the couch and feel it in my throat. I have to sit up, it feels ok for a while but the gag creeps up and I ultimately throw up. I am almost 30, weigh 115lbs and cannot gain weight because I feel so sick when I eat. This gag is going to be the end of me. Is there anything I can do? Could it be symptoms of something else, something I should be worries about?!

Hello Jamez,

A lot of people have a sensitive gag reflex so you're not alone.  However, yours sounds excessive.  You may have something that is bothering you like not being able to gain weight.  This may be creating a form of anxiety.  This calls for professional help.  I suggest you see your general practioner (GP) and have them give you a physical and discuss your gag reflex issue.  Chances are you are experiencing anxiety of some type and need something to calm you down.  If you don't have a GP then try going to a walk in clinic.  There should be one close to you.  You don't need an appointment for this.  I think once you see a doctor you'll have some sense of relief and peace of mind.

Hi Susan,
I have been thinking about having a physical, etc. lately. Your response confirms I need to get that in motion sooner than later. Yes, it definitely does cause anxiety and then some. It makes me nervous going to a doctor for things not in the 'norm' as I did that once and after $5,000 they found absolutely nothing. Granted, it was issues with my stomach, and this actually may be somehow related....
