I would suggest that you air your concern with your neurologist. He is in a position to support your decision not to take the injection. The more serious side effects of cortisone injection include the introduction of harmful bacteria at the injection site resulting in a secondary infection, softening of the cartilage and tendons at the injection site, elevation of blood sugar, immunosuppression, loss of bone mass. For obvious reasons, the number of injections that they can give you is limited. Given your age, this may not have been too much of an issue. On the other hand, if the injection works for you, it can give almost instant pain relief that can last for weeks or months at a time. If I were in your position, I would at least give it a try. You can always discontinue the treatment at any time if it does not work for you.
