i did my surgery 3 days ago the pain is not like some people here said it would be i think they exaggerated. I have seen what looks like the hemorrhoid still there. come on people its a surgery and tissues are removed u will have inflammation i take cataflam for mine plus sitz bath 3 times a day as hot as i can handle. re the smelly discharge i have had it too its normal. When i did surgery on my impacted wisdom tooth i had swelling and discharge so its normal. Just do the sitz bath and drink mineral oil and relax. U r going thru a tunnel and soon u will smile at the sunshine on the other end.

right now am in my warm water dont forget to add salt , this helps the swelling and healing process, the only problem am having now is pain during bowel movement but the mineral oil is doing well there. try and eat high fiber diet and soft food no dumpling eat lots a bean, banana and drink loads a water.

I think that the water thing definitely helps. Soft food doesn't always lead to soft stool though. You definitely want to avoid rice because that can cause constipation and that would be intensely painful at a point like this. What else do you suggest?

for all those who had a surgery, how bad were your hemorrhoids and how much would you think this impact the recovery time? I have some which come and go since last 2 years. These come and go mainly when i either go running or lift something heavy at the gym. But I cant take the restricted life anymore, I want to go bike, run,swim... I am not even sure if mine are internal or external ones, but based on the information I see they might be external ones
I am going to see the doctor on Wednesday and see what he says. Futher information about me 24 yr old healthy male. No bleeding, just some pressure when I sit and twitching when i run/swim...

I too had no bleeding or pain really, except pain when flared up like after over exuberant gym work etc. Mine were internal, however one would prolapse down inside the mucus wall and appear as an external swelling after bowel movements. It had improved with taking Movicol routinely every day (i.e. a stool softener) but thought I should still get it done as I wanted to rule it out as a contributor to a pelvic pain issue I have. Well they cut away 4 of the buggers... so no doubt the recovery time is dependent on size and number of them. It will be interesting to see how I feel once it is all settled, which might be some time away yet, as I had stopped running and daren't do weights.

First stop would be to get checked out by your doctor - if they are internal then they may just be able to band them which is less traumatic (though the last banding I had was horrifically uncomfortable for the first afternoon... the previous was not as bad). For me the banding failed after 1 day each time so thought best to get sorted.

I think ultimately recovery from full haemorrhoidectomy etc will be dependent on the precise location, how they are fixed up by the surgeon, the method used, and you as an individual; just reading the board here shows a variety of recovery times. The other thing is to consider why you got them in the first place.... if you get them sorted but don't change the contributing factors then you'll get them again. But for now, if it is interfering with life, sounds like you do need to do something. Good luck.

DV1970 thanks for the answers. How would you rate your pain? Was it as bad as what some of the people have mentioned? Since your case was not very bad, and I see myself to be in a similar condition...also why did your rubber band process not work? did you have untolerable pain?

Hi darklord4,
Have you checked your self with a doctor ever for this or this is the first time you are going?
If this is the first time, you should try to get as many information as you can. There are a lot of people here on SteadyHealth that went through this, some with very bad experiences (recovery lasting for few months) and some with great results, just in two weeks.
Give us an update as soon as you can.

Cheers.

Hi darklord,
Great news, I mean at least for the surgery and hemorrhoids. I hope that your rectal scope will go well. Will he be calling you for scope or you just need to go?

Take care of your self.

Hi there..
I had my first surgery on 2nd October - banding of 'smaller' internal hemorrhoids and of one prolapsed, and on 15th October (4 weeks ago) I had closed hemorrhoidectomy - 3 large internal hr's removed.

It was difficult but I survived, stool softeners, sitz baths, painkillers, it all helped.. Bleeding stopped after three weeks.

And yes, I also have those so-called skin tags outside and I am worried about that.. last week I went to first check in hospital and my doctor told me they are not hr's but skin tags that will go away with the time. and if they don't, they will remove them surgically.

They got smaller but because this week I went back to work they started again to be swollen and to hurt me, so I'd prefer not to work this week but I had to..

I have another check in hospital in two weeks and then they'll decide if I will have to have third intervention, to remove these skin tags, but also some internal polyps which they couldn't remove at once cause it would be too much..

Just to say to everyone considering this operation, yes it is painful but hey - we all survived.
Hopefully in few weeks or months I will be able to put all this behind me and to start to live a normal life again.
and I would not be able to do that if I haven't done this.

Btw I'm 40 y/o healthy female.. never had a problem with this in my life until two months ago, it all happened very quickly so I had not any other option left..

good luck to all

I may post again in two weeks to say what happened..

When I frantically sought advice nine months ago about the terrifyingly extreme external swelling after my hemorrhoidectomy, tons of people had also posted their same experiences. But NO ONE had given an update. UNTIL NOW!!!!

To those of you worried about extreme external swelling protruding from your anus AFTER your hemorrhoidectomy surgery, this is my story. I had the surgery done March '09. The bloody, swollen mess protruding from my anus was MUCH worse than the two little bubbles that were removed (but I also had internal hem's removed as well.) My skin was ripping off the stitches (absorbable sutures), and my anus looked like a letter X inside a letter O (instead of a dot). The O morphed into a fat horseshoe. (By the way, the bleeding lasted about a month, which transitioned into a lightly colored wet SEEPING for another month.) Long strings (the dissolveable sutures) kept hanging out of my rectum, and I kept having to snip them off!! In extreme alarm, I went to the surgeons TWICE before my scheduled follow-up appointment...which they eventually postponed to 2 months after the surgery . All three times, I kept hearing, "Oh, that's normal." So on the third visit at the official "follow-up", I made the surgeon PROMISE me that if it hadn't gone away in six months, that he would re-do the surgery.

Six months later, the swelling had gone down considerably, but the shape of external stuff was STILL THERE. In fact, it was the same size as the external hemorrhoids that I had removed, except for now they were flat, flappy, and bleeding instead of puffy, blood-filled, and bleeding. The surgeon insisted they were just "skin tags" and didn't need to be removed. I angrily reminded him of his promise, and he agreed to redo the surgery (of course, he insisted on labelling the surgery a "skin tag removal" ).

One week ago, he redid the surgery (December 1, 2009). A week has passed, and the terrible swelling, flesh-ripping-out-of-the-stitches, bleeding, splitting is there all over again, just with a little bit smaller version. I called the nurse, and she said to stay off my feet and wait til the follow up, which is in eight days.

So to those of you who are horrified at your new post-hemorrhoidectomy BABOON ASS, the answer is NO. It does not ALL go away, no matter what your doctor tells you.

I had my Hemmorrhoidectomy surgery yesterday. I'm now lying in bed trying to learn more from other people's experiences.

I've had roids since I was 17. Today I'm 41 and a pretty healthy male otherwise. I had both internal and external roids that required being pushed back after BMs. A few months ago I noticed trace amount of pus looking discharge. My primary physician diagnosed it as a boil that looked like it was healing on it's own. After 3 weeks and the same symptoms I was referred to a surgeon. He diagnosed it as an Anal Fisula and surgery as the best way to repair it. Since he was going to be in there I told him I wanted to have the roids removed too. He wanted to schedule the surgery within the month. But I opted to wait until the first of the year so my health insurance deduction would be met this
year.

The proceedure went well from what a gather. I didn't speak to the surgeon afterwards, but he told my wife they were extensive. The only med given to me is percocet with aspirin. Last night was horible. I was in so much pain and the meds weren't helping. I also had the sensation of wanting to go pee but nothing came out. Because of this I was up and down all night.

When I woke-up this morning I started doubling the percocet to 10mg. That helped a lot and at some points today felt no pain. But tonight I'm right back square one with the pain and meds no helping. ...continued...

Anyway, tonight they're sore again. At certain points it felt like I was going to have my first BM. But I didn't want to strain, so I hopped in the tub for the 4th time today. Not to mention how dificult it is to urinate. My bladder is full, but for some reason nothing is coming out. And I can't keep standing there waiting as that make my ass throb.

The reason I sought this forum out was to get suggestions for making that first BM as easy as possible. I think I'm going to need to go tomorrow. I took one 100mg. Colace tonight. But know I'm going to need more foods that will help soften my stool.

Well this is about all I have to say for tonight. I'll try and post daily updates at least for the first few days.

Dear Myassisonfire,

The following is my unprofessional opinion only. I'm not a doctor.

Dude! You have to go to your doctor RIGHT AWAY. Not being able to pee is listed on the "if any of the following happens after your hemmorhoidectomy, call the doctor" list! Also, one thing I've learned the hard way is to not just eat fiberous foods. You've got to take lots of stool softener consistently. It's been a couple of months since my follow up surgery (he called it a post-hemmoroidectomy skin tag removal surgery) and I'm still pooping blood every few days from not soft enough stools.

Can you post again to tell us how it's going?
