Should I be concerned about my swollen and tender breasts? I am on the third month of the Depo Provera birth control shot. My breasts have been tender and swollen for over a week now. Do I need to call my GYN and schedule an appointment to get a clinical breast exam?

Hello, Susan.

It's important to note that breast changes can have various causes, and it's always a good idea to consult with your doctor for a proper evaluation and advice specific to your situation.

Swollen and tender breasts can be a side effect of hormonal changes, which can occur with certain types of birth control methods, including the Depo Provera shot. Breast tenderness is a known side effect of hormonal contraception and is generally considered a common and non-serious reaction.

However, if you have concerns or if the symptoms are severe or persistent, it's advisable to reach out to your gynecologist for further evaluation. He can assess your symptoms, perform a clinical breast exam if necessary, and provide appropriate guidance.
