Hi there,

I suspect that I may have a Rectovaginal Fistula but I'm not sure. I wanted to ask those with it what your symptoms are?

I had a forceps assisted birth 3 years ago which resulted in 4th degree tearing. I had bowel incontinence but with pelvic floor therapy have regained some strength. Now I only have incontinence if I have bad diarrhea and it will leak out a bit.

lately I have found stool leaking/yellow discharge coming from my vagina when I wipe a few hours after a bad bowel movement. But it's only the times when I have had very bad diarrhea. Maybe once a month? No foul smelling discharge otherwise.

my question is how frequently does stool pass the vagina if it's truly a fistula? Would it always be coupled with infections or foul discharge?

Hi there ... Well, the most common symptoms of a rectovaginal fistula are discharge of stool or gas from the vagina, sometimes followed by painful bowel movements and frequent abdominal discomfort. Foul-smelling discharge from the vagina is also one of the symptoms that points to ongoing infection.

However, back to your question ... Usually the frequency of stool passing through the vagina will depend on the size and location of the fistula, as well as any other associated medical conditions. It may range from multiple times a day to only occasionally. Infections and foul discharge are common symptoms of a fistula and may be present.

I think it's best if you get an appointment with your Obgyn to make sure this rectovaginal fistula
