Hello,

my brother was just recently diagnosed with schizophrenia and after he was released his psychiatrist wanted him to continue with Haldol as his main medication. However, he is experiencing several Haldol side effects which make it even harder for him to return to everyday life. The main problems are muscle stiffness and tremor.

That’s why we’ve been researching online and found the info about Seroquel - the newer antipsychotic medication which shouldn’t have the side effects Haldol does. If anyone has experience with these medications and schizophrenia - which one is more effective and with less side effects?

Hello,

like you said, the main benefit of Seroquel over Haldol is that is comparatively newer medication, so it doesn't cause as severe side effects as Haldol does, and not as often, even though like most medications, of course, it can cause side effects as well.

But generally why most psychiatrist try to use Seroquel more often is that it doesn't cause Parkinson-disease like symptoms related to muscle spasms, hand or legs trembling, etc... So it's definitely worth discussing this option with a psychiatrist.
