A comprehensive comparative study on old and new antipsychotic drugs led to conclusion that newer drugs that have been widely prescribed in the last couple of years are no more effective or safer than the older, cheaper drug that has been largely discontinued. Most of the previous studies have been conducted by drugmakers and they certainly wouldn’t give us the real picture.
Schizophrenia, a disabling illness, afflicts about 3.2 million Americans causing symptoms like delusions, hallucinations and disordered thinking: As every drug, old and new, caused them serious side effects, a large number of patients would just stop taking drugs.
Newer drugs, marketed on the ground they caused fewer side effects, had taken over 90% of the market. These facts about the new drugs were given without first being systematically compared against older drugs.
Older antipsychotics are known to cause involuntary muscle movements but the newer drugs are being associated with some potentially fatal metabolic problems.
However, the point of this research was not to produce a winner, as both drugs have their risks and benefits, but to emphasize significance of doctors’ judgment in deciding which drugs to prescribe.
