Im interested in drug named colchicines. I think that it is plant derived substance. I have heard that it is very toxic and was used for poisoning. What does it heal in human body and how is it used? Is it really isolated from a plant and which plant is it?

Colchicine is isolated from seeds of colchicum autumnale or autumn crocus. As drug, it is used in treatment of gout, pseudogout, billiary and hepathic cirrhosis and some other. It is very toxic but as drug is available in therapeutic dosages, it is not poisonous in these doses. Colchicine poisoning is very dangerous and has no specific antidote, it leads to respiratory failure. Pumping the stomach and active charcoal are used in these situations.
