You shouldn't be putting any cream on your vagina, you should see a doctor to have this peeling checked. It could be yeast infection but it could also be contact dermatitis i.e a skin reaction to some kind of an irritant like harsh detergents, vaginal deodorants or creams.

That sounds like a yeast infection. To be sure you should go see a gynecologist. But a simple solution would be to try some over the counter yeast cream such as Monistat, and if this relieves your symptoms, then you will know for sure that it's yeast.
Other conditions can cause itching and redness too, so only a physician can answer your question for certain.

To the author,
Are you sure this is something more than normal vaginal discharge? All women's vaginas excrete a normal amount of discharge. Normally, it will be clear or whitish and will range anywhere in viscosity from snot-like to a little bit thick; almost like if you mixed flour and water together. It should not smell bad. Granted, we all have our own unique bodily scents and to some, the smell of their own vagina will seem a little "weird" or "bad" but rest assured, unless it smells fishy or foul, then it is probably normal and actually, that "weird" smell contains pheromones, which makes your scent attractive to members of the opposite sex. In Anne Frank's diary, one passage of hers that really stood out to me was when she started to notice "whitish stains" in her panties as she was entering puberty. When we are younger, our bodies don't really secrete anything from there. Just like how our hair doesn't grow in thick and we don't really smell bad when we sweat. But as we enter into adulthood (at least physically) the hormones flowing through our bodies begin to change the excretions of our bodies. In other words, this is all a normal part of growing up and going through puberty.
If the discharge is clumpy, very thick, smells bad, or is a weird color (anything besides clear or white), then I would suggest going to see a doctor about it. It may be something as simple as a yeast infection, which is merely an over-abundance of a certain bacteria inside the vagina. Really, the idea is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria; it is warm, moist, and dark. Yeast infections will usually have symptoms such as abnormal discharge, itchiness, pain during sexual intercourse, and sometimes a weird smell. They can be caused by anything from wearing pants that are too tight to not changing out of a wet swim suit quickly enough. This link, from womenshealth.gov, has a lot of really good information on vaginal yeast infections and should give you a good bit of information on them if you think that is what you may be experiencing:
When I was 14, I experienced my first yeast infection. It scared the living hell out of me. All of a sudden, there was this clumpy, cottage cheese like discharge coming from my body and I was absolutely disgusted. Luckily, I had a gynecologist appointment the very next day (which was also to be my very first gynecological exam). When I saw the doctor, she told me what it was and prescribed me a very popular medication called Diflucan, which is a pill that you can take that will clear the infection up. It is definitely a popular treatment because unlike the ones you can buy at the grocery store, it is as simple as taking a pill and waiting for the results. The ones available at the store though and not difficult to use and for most, do the job just fine. I would suggest using the 3, 5, or 7 day treatments as opposed to the one day ones; when I tried the one day, it caused extreme swelling on my vulva and it literally caused my labia to swell to twice it's normal size and it was very painful. But as long as you use it as directed and use some panties that you don't really care about ruining when inserting the medicine in at night, you should do just fine.
The best advice any of us could give is to visit your gynecologist and express your concerns with him or her. They will be able to diagnose and problems or issues if they do exist.

Also, you should not try over the counter medicines on yourself until you receive an official diagnosis, at least not the very first time. You should get the diagnosis from your doctor and should any more infections occur, only THEN should you feel comfortable diagnosing and treating the infection yourself. When I encountered my first one, I visited the doctor before progressing with any sort of treatment. And I actually continued getting infections for a few months. It wasn't until my doctor saw me come in one day in my jeans that she was able to tell me why I kept getting them repeatedly.
As a 14 year old girl, I was concerned with making myself attractive to the boys my age, which meant I was wearing skin-tight jeans and despite the fact that they felt a bit uncomfortable in the crotch area, I continued wearing them because hey! They made my butt look good. When I found out that they were the reason I was getting these terribly uncomfortable and itchy infections, I stopped wearing them and filled my closet with new and looser fitting jeans. If you want that same look without having the risk of infecting yourself, find jeans that are made with a bit of spandex, or look for the stretchy jeans. Most companies make them and I think at this point, that material is more common than regular denim. Since I made the switch, I have not had any yeast infections that were caused by anything more than a hormonal shift in my body.
And while I am on the subject, yeast infections are common when starting or getting off of birth control. Because of the hormonal change happening, it will make your body more susceptible to said infections. A lot of times too, yeast infections will clear up on their own by the time your period starts. Sometimes, your period can be thought of as a hormonal regulator and it will sometimes "reset" your body and hormones back to their normal levels. Also, though it hasn't been studied much, it is thought that it may be possible to transmit a yeast infection to your partner, be they male or female. Yeast infections are not something exclusive to women and men can get them too. For them, it usually occurs in an even worse place; the anus. So if you happen to be sexually active, just wait until the infection clears before engaging in any kind of sexual activity that involves penetration or mouth-to-body contact. If you cannot wait, use protection like dental dams or condoms (and really, use them ANY TIME you have sex...1 in 4 young people has an STD nowadays and that is too high of a number to be taking risks like that) and you and your partner should was your hands before and after sexual contact. Not just that, but a lot of times a warning sign of a yeast infection is painful sexual intercourse.
