What causes it (most often)?

Muscle spasm is the most probable cause of the pain you may experience during the masturbation, orgasm and after it. Some people have this problem all the time, while others encounter it occasionally and almost everyone experienced it at least once in a lifetime. The reason lies in the fact that, during masturbation, the position of the hands, neck, and head puts a lot of pressure on the muscles in the neck. The increased tension of the neck muscles is sometimes even more augmented not just by a mechanical pressure, but with a psychological pressure to “finish” as soon as possible. Patients report this issue as a sporadic and (most often) it resolves after a few days of abstaining from sex and masturbation.

Excessive masturbation can cause the pain as well. Although it may be considered as a “normal behavior” during puberty (to a certain extent!), in some cases an excessive masturbation may be caused by drugs [1]. Sexual addiction is also recognized as a reason for excessive masturbation and the health issues that follows it [2].

Having in mind that differential diagnosis of neck pain is quite diverse, this answer has an informative value and depending on your age, overall health and the severity of the symptoms, the underlying cause of your neck pain may something else.

What other symptoms may occur?

Neck pain is not the only symptom that people complain of. A headache is another quite common complaint. It may present as a tension headache (the feeling that the whole head hears), frontal headache (quite often the reason is sinus inflammation- acute or chronic which, backed up with increased blood flow to the head, triggers a pulsating headache in the area of a forehead). During the sexual intercourse, masturbation and orgasm blood pressure increases, which may cause a headache and a pulsating hum in the ears. Since the blood vessels in the back of the neck supply cerebellum with blood, a transitional decrease in blood flow can provoke vertigo episodes or even faintness.

What can you do to resolve it?

The best strategy is to abstain from sexual intercourse and masturbation for a few days. Relaxing during masturbation may help as well. Pay attention to the tension in your neck and shoulder while masturbating and try to avoid straining those muscles too much. Find the most comfortable position and avoid “pushing” towards orgasm by straining the back, neck and shoulder muscles. If the pain worsens as the time passes by or you notice that symptoms are developing further and further, schedule an appointment with your doctor.

Alarming signals that should make you schedule an appointment with your doctor

Mild symptoms that don’t have the tendency of worsening and seem to resolve slowly shouldn’t worry you too much. Extreme, crippling pain is definitely not a symptom that should be neglected. Faintness, really loud hum in the ears or dizziness are alarming symptoms that should make you call your doctor and schedule appointment.
