o.O I too am taking atenelol for the last year and heart palps have increased, weight; always could loose it before - not now. I am up all night if I do not take sleep aids. I always had high sex drive and now that is gone. I plan to see a new doctor since the last one chooses to ignore my complaints about it. It is difficult to get any doctor who takes over another doctor's practice to change anything; not to mention one who moved from another country. This week I have tried cimitidine and that is working great. Hope I can talk to my new doctor about this. Cimitidine is supposed to be good for my heart. I hope the next doctor listens to me. I may run out of doctors. ;-)

How did you get the idea to take cimetidine to treat palpitations? Cimetidine is indicated to treat excessive production of stomach acid, heartburn and stomach ulcers. All the other uses of cimetidine are not approved. And as I guess this is important fact for you, it is established that cimetidine causes loss of libido and impotence in males. Fortunately, not irreversible. Nowadays, it is even not that widely used in treatment of these stomach problems, because there are new medications available, with fewer side effects.
All the drugs that are used to treat high blood pressure cause decreased sexual drive. Do not run out of doctors and take your condition seriously. Go do some tests, like ECG and holter. Stop smoke if you do, avoid sudden changes of position, decrease caffeine and alcohol intake, both physical and psychical stress are triggers of arrhythmia. It is a paradox that betablockers and antiarrhytmic drugs can cause arrhythmia if not used in proper doses. So, I believe that dose adjustment of atenolol that was prescribed to you would be the right solution.

I just thought I would see if there were others out in cyber world who were on Atenelol that had the same symptoms as I do. I have noticed very heavy palpitations once I take my 50 mg of Atenelol. I have mytrovalveprolapse, which most of the population does. My mytrovalveprolapse hasn't caused me very much trouble. I still exercise, etc. But I have noticed that I've had nothing but problems since I've been on Atenelol, (i.e. palpitations, dizziness) The dizziness has long since subsided and haven't had a problem with that in a while, but the palpitations just started 2 months ago. I was placed on Atenelol after having my baby 1 year ago, due to stress induced by a recent divorce, and so the doctor placed me on it and said that I would be able to get off of it after a couple of months. My doctor has done a stress test on me, etc. and hasn't a clue that it could be the Atenelol. I would very much like to get off of it, but I know that your doctor has to wean you off. I don't know what to do!!!
