Hi, I have a long history of heart diseases and three weeks ago when I had my last seizure of chest pain my doctor gave me these pills called Atenelol and said that they should cure the chest pain. I have been taking them for the past three weeks and I have noticed a great improvement, the chest pain seems to be gone forever. I have missed few doses and I'm wondering if it’s OK if I stopped using those pills? Am I cured, and could the fact that I have stopped using atenelol have an effect on my health.

Medications like atenelol are called beta blockers and they are not a cure for heart problems but rather are just a way of treating them and controlling them. You must have misunderstood your doctor because he or she couldn’t have possibly said that atenelol cured your condition. It is used only to slow the heart beat and to widen the blood vessels which puts pressure off the heart so that it doesn’t have to pump so much blood into the system. It is often combined with a medication for increase in kidney filtration whose purpose is to reduce the volume of blood thus reducing the strain on the heart. You shouldn’t have stopped using the pills as soon as you felt the improvement, in fact, it is very dangerous to do so without consulting your doctor. I think you should consult your physician as soon as possible to avoid the negative consequences of any kind. Good luck let us know if you’re OK.

Hi, I too was prescribed atenelol after visiting a clinic when I was suffering chest pains. When they tested my blood pressure, I was at 198/112 and 50 mgs of atenelol was prescribed at that time. Two weeks later they increased the dose to 100mg when my blood pressure was not coming down quickly enough. I am still on that dosage, as well as 12.5 mgs hydraclorothiazide and 4 mg coversyl. Lately, I have been just horrible at remembering to take my meds (there is just so much going on in my life) and with the ups and downs of sometimes remembering to take it, or not take it, Ii have found that the chest pains are back full throttle. I never found that the atenelol was a "cure" for the chest pain I have been experiencing, but lately, by not taking it when I should be (daily) I have found that they are starting to get pretty intense. The reason for my high blood pressure has never been confirmed (the joys of an overburdened medical system here in Canada: I don't have a doctor and have to see a different one each time I need a prescrip refill). I can't say I really have suffered any insomnia, although with the stress of a husband in the military and away in Afghanistan, there are nights that I don't sleep very well. I have noticed ringing in my ears. (Any one else get this?? ). But as far as a cure for the chest pain...atenelol is by no means a cure.
