Hello,

I was diagnosed with major depression few weeks ago and my doctor started me first on fluoxetine. I suppose it’s still too early to see any major improvement and I can’t really say I even notice I’m taking an antidepressant. It’s a big disappointment after finally being diagnosed and getting therapy.

I’ve been reading a bit online, and at least on wikipedia they say that venlafaxine is more effective antidepressant, so would it make sense to ask my psychiatrist to change my medications?

Hi,

just a few weeks is far too early to notice major improvement in depression symptoms, especially if you've been suffering from depression for long period of time. It takes fluoxetine 2-3 weeks to become effective and for your brain to get used to the new chemicals, so it's definitely early now for you to change medications.

You'd only end up in the same situation because venlafaxine too needs few weeks to start working and you'd again think that the treatment is not working. You need to give fluoxetine a bit more time, before considering switching medications.
