It is kind of hard to do research when the doctor tells you that yOu do not need to do research and this is the safest type of birth control.. I have almost passed out several times, felt dizzy and I feel like a zombie, it has changed my personality negatively and I have only had the shot once... and I had the shot 3 weeks ago.

You may not have had any negative side effects.. for those who have its good to know that we are not alone.. and that it isnt just us.. so I thank THose who have posted these...

I have been on the Depo shot for over a year now..I spotted for a couple months on and off but now I only spot (sometimes) a week or two before my next shot, now i have no period which is glorious. I find it better than the pill because i dont have to worry about "omg" did i take it around the same time? will it matter? or did i forget to take it today? Also,I have had no adverse side effects, just a painfully bum after the shot. But my doctor told me I could only take it for 2 years then spend a year off then get back on it because it lowers ability to conceive, the longer your on it the longer it takes. But everyone's body reacts differently to any kind of BC or medication which is what everyone complaining seems to neglect to mention.

FROM WHAT I'VE READ, IT SEEMS MOST OF YOU DID NOT THOUROUGHLY READ UP ON THE DEPO SHOT BEFORE YOU DECIDED TO TAKE IT. AND SOME OF YOU SAYING THAT YOUR DOC TOLD YOU THERE ARE NO SIDE EFFECTS? YOU MUST BE PRETTY STUPID TO HAVE BELIEVED HIM/HER! EVERY WOMAN IS DIFFERENT, BODY AND MIND-WISE.
I'M SORRY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE HAD BAD EXPERIENCES, BUT YOU SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR THE SIDE EFFECTS. ITS NOT THE SHOTS FAULT THAT YOUR BODY CANT HANDLE IT.
I'M ON IT, AND IT IS GREAT. I HAVEN'T GOTTEN FAT FROM IT, NONE OF THIS RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME, OR WEIRD BLLEDING STORIES..

I have had 1 depo shot and I can honestly say it has been a f*****g nightmare I was very uninformed as well. I took it to curve my bleeding well NEWSFLASH it did 100% opposite I have had severe bleeding for the last 40 days non stop. I disagree be scared in fact be terrified of this disgusting form of birth control. I honestly think it should be illegal

I've been on the Depo Provera shot for 11 years, yes, 11 years. I was 17 when I got it, I am now 28. I have not had any bad side effects. I did come off of the shot for only 3 months during the 11 years, and was on the NuvaRing...I hated it. The NuvaRing gave me bad side effects. After a visit with my doctor, I learned that I cannot have birth control that contains estrogen...it makes me sick (dizziness, nausua, vomitting for days straight). Depo Provera does not contain estrogen. I've done lots of research on the Depo, and I am very well aware that I may have lost bone density over the years. But in my research, it is not "definate" that every person loses bone density. Some women have gotten off the Depo, and their bone density was not affected. In my opinion, when it comes to birth control (or any medication), EVERY person is different and it may have different effects on each person. I personally have not had any bad experiences or effects with the Depo. In regards to the weight gain issue with the Depo, I have read about research done, and the Depo ITSELF does NOT cause weight gain....what the Depo does is it increases appetite, which in turn causes some people to eat more. So basically, the Depo doesn't make you gain weight, you control when and what you eat, so its up to you if you will give in to the increased appetite. But again, not everyone experiences the weight gain, the increased appetite, etc. I know I don't. Over the 11 years, yes, I gained weight, but it wasn't due to the Depo, it was due to me growing up and that's what happens as you grow. I was 17 when I started, so of course at the age of 28 I'm not going to be the same weight I was at 17. My weight gain has been normal over the years. I like the Depo, and its great not having a period for all those years. If you have concerns, please speak to a doctor and try different methods to see which is best for you.

Fist person who wrote the c**p on top should go jump off a building!First of all i was on that c**p for 7 years starting in 2000 and was never told of the bone density issue just the minor issues i trusted my local plan parenthood to look out for my health and never thought i had to do any research on the product.I thought the doctors at the clinic knew what they were giving me every three months but i guess the $89.00 was all they really cared about.I to was never told to take any calcuim pills so here i am only 24 years old with the bones of a 70 year old woman!I have lots of lower back pain because of a many deteriating disc in my lower spine!Again yes this is normal for an ageing person but NOT for a young woman who is 24 years old and have never worked a day in my life!I think its great for everyone to know whats going on from people that have been through it!The doctors that sell this c**p wont say anything because of fear they wont get paid! All the girls and woman need to know what will happen if they are on this drug longer than two years because i wish i would have been told before so i could quit this c**p i dont belive i would be in all the pain i am in now if i would have been told myself.People like myself that will be having issues with there bones and body for the rest of there life should do something about it.I think we should file a classaction lawsuit and make the makers of depo pay for what has been done to us for all the long term problems that we will have even being off the shot!

I have used depo for only 3 months, so one shot and I have actually lost weight. I am overweight to begin with so obviously this is good for me. I have noticed some hair loss toward the end of the three months BUT I can't say for certain that it is due to the Depo as I have gone through periods where this has happened before but everything seems to return to normal. The only gripe I have is that toward the end of the three months, before your next shot, be prepared. You will go through hell, at least I did. I got severe abdominal and back pain to where it was painful to sit and get up. I was scared out of my mind so I called up my Dr and they said it was totally normal. Normal but painful! I then bled for two weeks straight, HEAVY bleeding. It was the most uncomfortable two weeks ever. Even so the side effects have been worth it since I am not prepared to have a child and you can't expect something to be 100% perfect for everyone.

I was on Depo for 5 years and 4 months. I switched from the birth control pill to the depo shot in April 2003. I immediately lost my period and LOST WEIGHT! I lost 40 pounds in 3 months! I was quite happy about that. (I was also taking adderall for my ADHD.) I was told to get off the depo shot after 2 years because it thins your bones. I never got a bone density test, which I was told to get for the last 4 years. After 2 years my doctor wouldn't let me be on the shot anymore so I tried the NuvaRing for a month and it was awful! I changed doctors and got back on the shot. While on Depo, I had ridiculous mood swings, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, back achs, NO sex drive and bad acne! I also have a few cysts on my ovaries and a lump on my right breast that I had to get biopsy's on. Not sure if related, but they only surfaced while I was on the depo shot. My weight stayed the same for the most part until I switched back to the birth control pill in Aug. 2008. I still take Adderall but I started gaining weight. I went from 128 pounds while on the shot, to my current weight of 141 pounds. I eat clean, and work out a lot. I actually train to compete in NPC Fitness Competitions. So it's not my diet. I am still waiting for my period to return. I fear the shot has left me infertile, but I still have take pregnancy tests all the time, because I don't get my period. My mood swings, anxiety and acne have gotten better since I got off Depo. My sex drive has returned, thank God! Initially the shot may seem great.... but the long term effects can be devastating. I really don't think it's a good idea to completely stop your periods. Unless you never want children.

I have been on the depo shot for a total of a little over 4 years. I don't have a period, but I do spot when it's supposed to be time for my period, I assume. My first time on the shot, I had no problems up until around the 2 year mark. From there, I was on what my family and I like to call an "emotional roller coaster". This consisted of severe mood swings as well as loss of my libido. I dealt with this for another 1/2 year, then decided I had enough. I tried 3 types of birth control pills, all of which caused me numerous amounts of problems. Weight gain(I gained 30 lbs.), excessive bleeding, clots the size of my hand, etc. So, I decided to go back to the shot. I have been back on the shot for almost 2 1/2 years now. I have been emotional at times, but it's nothing like the first time. I didn't gain any weight the first time, and I haven't gained any this time. I actually lost weight both times. The only issue that I'm stressing over now is conceiving. I am 23 years old, my fiance' will be 27 and he is ready to have a child within the next year and a half. I am afraid of the long term effects that the shot may have caused me. If anyone has any success stories or can give me some advice on this matter, please do so.

*One thing the doctor may not have told you: If you take an antibiotic while on the depo provera shot, don't have unprotected sex. The antibiotic cancels the shot out and you have a possibility of conceiving. I have a friend in which this happened to. Nothing is worse than becoming pregnant when you are confident that it's being prevented.

I understand that the shot was developed to help people out and make it so that you don't have to take pills all the time but I think it's more trouble than it's worth. I hope that you all continue to share your stories. Thanks for your insight into everything!

I have been on the depo shot for over a year now. From what I have heard from my doctor, women on dp experience a continous period only when they recieve their first depo injection when they are NOT menstruating. On your first depo injection you MUST BE ON YOUR PERIOD or yes, you will bleed for three months. I have also heard of women who experience severe weight gain or hair loss. I myself have experienced neither of these symptoms while being on the depo shot for over a year. Honestly, as far as I can tell there have been no changes in my body except only menstruate the week my depo is due and its very light. There IS a black box label warning that dp can cause osteoporosis. To avoid that condition take calcium supplements and avoid being on the depo while you're bone mass is still developing (18 or younger) or avoid being on it for years at a time.
