I had two 2 cycles of depo this year. I am 39 and used to weigh 135. I have always been very active and fit. My fitness is a requirement of my job.

My first realization of what was happening on depo hit me when I got the courage to look at the scale. 179 lbs was the reading. I gained about 5-10 lbs with in the first 3 weeks. I went from a size 29 waist to a size 35. My stomach was distended as if I were a pregnant woman late in her second trimester. The heaviest I had ever been was at age 26 and the weight seemed to show in my thighs and arms. The weight I put on during my time on depo was around my back and stomach, a true "spare tire". I am in a profession that demands fitness and a healthy appearance, I nearly lost my job.

My breast went from a 34 DD to a size 38 G which is now ill fitting because that size bra is too small. My breasts have remained large and have not gone down AT ALL. The shoulder, neck and back pain is excruciating.

Bone pain has been another terrible side effect. I am religious about taking my supplements. I am on prenatal and I told caltrat as directed. This did not prevent or easy my new bone pain.

On depo I was terribly depressed and was sedentary. The depression hit its stride around week 4. The self loathing was at an all time high. I am not sure of my lack of sex drive was due to my embarrassment being naked or if it was a side effect.

I went from spinning 5 days a week to nothing. I had no energy and was ashamed of my rapidly changing figure and tried to hide from anyone I knew. I was desperate and ate white fish, dry broccoli and a small amount of wild rice as my three meals. The weight continued to add on. The most odd thing was that I was eating half as much as usual and I felt like vomiting constantly.

My good friend who normally bought me my true size M, bought me clothes in size XL for my birthday assuming that was my new size.

At my heaviest I was 186. I am too afraid to go on the scale but I am a VERY SNUG 31 pant size now. My waist and back fat overwhelm the waist band.

I have lost some weight with a great effort. My stomach and back remains incredibly large, no waist to speak of. There is a layer of cellulite textured fat about 2 1/2 thick across my abdomen. Until depo, my body never looked like this. I am afraid after being off of depo as long as I was on it, I am permanently disfigured.

I have odd red welts that scab like massive mosquito bites on my chest, arms, back, hairline and along my my jaw line

My friend Ann said she was fine on depo and even lost a few pounds. Personally, I think the drug should be heavily restricted and most responsibly taken off the market.

How long after did your periods come?

+50 lb weight gain in the first 2 months. Even on fish, broccoli and 1/4 wild rice3X's a day for a week I still was gaining at break-neck speeds. I've had to go on a medically observed weightloss program and I can't lose the last 30 lbs on 800 calls a day, no complex carbs with a day and an hour of rigorous cardio. The first 3 months I bled. After 2 rounds of depo I went off and it took a year to get my period back. It was a life changing experience I wish I could take back.

I am in a similar situation. I have only taken the shot one time and have experienced severe hair loss and 15 pounds of weight gain. I just hope these side effects are reversible and that I have not major damage to my body including being unable to conceive ever again.

For those considering to use Depo Provera or any other birth control method, please research as much as possible on it, the side effects can possibly change your life forever.  My personal opinion is to stay away if you absolutely do not need to take them.  It was the worst decision I made when I was just 19 years old.  I was naive and didn't understand what I was doing to my body, I never asked questions, nor looked into what the side effects were until it was too late.  I only received one shot and that was all it took for it to affect me.  Now 15 years later I am still struggling with with hair loss and hair thinning, for me it has been irreversible.  My hair has never grown back to what it was, causing stress, heart ache, insecurity and it was definitely not worth it.  I have gone to different doctors and hair consultants for help with no positive results.  I deal with this everyday, trying to style my hair in a way that is not noticeable to prevent staring and people asking me questions.  I hope that my story can prevent someone else from making the same mistake.

I lost all libido- & that includes masturbation. The desire just wasn't there. Since going off of the shot 8 yrs. ago, I have slowly started to regain sexual desires but arousal is still a challenge. I've gone as far as trying to retrain my body & rebuild the bridge between my brain & hormones. No sarcasm intended, it's a successful birth control because you no longer want the activity.

I recently got the Depo shot July 15, 2015 and let me tell you it is horrible. Before the shot I was always happy and cheerful, nothing ever got to me. About July 19 in the afternoon I started feeling really shakey and my heart started to race; I didnt think anything of it I thought it would just go away the next day with a nights rest. The next day as I walked to my office I started getting headaches to the point I would see blurry and at nights I would get this feeling of being watched and I couldn't sleep, I would wake up every 10-15 min. July 22 I thought to my self this is it so I went to the Prompt Clinic but they told me I had to go to the ER; so I did but they didn't do anything because they said its a result of the shot. I regret taking the shot and I hope everyone else reading this does not take the shot. I just got the shot and I have to wait til the effects go away to feel better. Now, my boyfriend can't really joke with me cuz it makes me cry and I start to panic. Also, any show I see that is just a tad emotional makes me cry. I cant stay in a room by myself yet alone shower by myself cuz i get paranoid. I hate it but nothing to do til it goes away.

iv been on depo around 2 years after reading the comments i probably wont get it again. only put on 10 pounds in a year i think. but when i got off the shot for little while i lost it in a month or 2. i did get a lot of spotting in the beginning. but i haven't got my period in a year. i got my shot today and i got discharge later in a day which pissed me off cause after missing one or 2 shots i finally stopped getting yeast infections and BV.

I got the depo shot last week and I just found this forum because ever since I got it I have been drained horrible cramps and jaw pain to the point I could hardly open my mouth and it hurts to chew my food...I won't be taking this again and it may work for others and not for someone else everyone is different and ever person reacts do drugs differently but from my experience it's just the worst like someone said the best bort control is having no sex
