Reading many of the posts here. I had a band ligation done on Wednesday, it is now Saturday. I thought instead of posting all about my misery, like all of the ohters I've read, I would post about what is helping.
I had the procedure doen during a coloscopy and a baloon dialtion for my chron's disease. He banded both sides, one side was grade 3 and the other was grade 2. I have had very little difficulty. Some discomfort after the procedure for about 24 hours, but that is passing. 2 Tylenol every 4 to 6 hours helped. It kind of felt like I needed a BM but couldn't. Dr. told me that was normal and that I should just go back to the toilet and try again. No straining or bearning down. My BMs are regular now but without the kind of pain I used to have with a BM before the procedure and they are passing very differently than before the procedure, in a positive way. There is some discomforat afterwards but a warm bath and keeping the area clean (without inserting my finger) with a mild soap (I am using ivory) is really helping. A bit of itching and stinging but it too passes in 15 to 20 minutes. I have also been eating six small meals a day and taking a teaspoon of Metamusil mixed into a glass or orange juice in the morning and before I go to bed. Other than the first day where Dr. told me to rest for the remainder of the day, he told me to go for a walk each day for about 20 minutes. I've been doing that. It helps. Also not to sit for any longer than 2 to 3 hours at a time and to get up and squeeze my buttocks 10 to 15 times every 2 hous or so. This is also helping.
So for anyone who has just had the procedure done, you have my sympathy. It will heal. And you may also feel alot better afterwards. I certainly do. I would rather be going thourgh this than the pain I've had with every BM I've had the past 3 years. I'll post again in a week with an update.

My advise to folks considering this wold be to make sure your doctor has had a lot of experience with the procedure and to follow the instructions they give you afterwards.

I came on to this forum a couple of weeks ago because my consultant hadn't told me it would be so sore and I was worried something had gone wrong. The pain had gone within 5 days or so and all is well HOWEVER I had a secret weapon to help me.
I still had some left over medicine prescribed for my fissure - now that is REALLY sore - because she couldn't do my colonoscopy or band until that was healed because the pain was so intense. I used this magic stuff a day or two after banding and it was great and made it all bearable until all had healed. Called Instillagel it contains lidocaine which is a local anaesthetic. It comes in a syringe tube and is used to numb all these areas of the body where something can be inserted... One tube is enough for 3 applications - you just need to be very careful with hygiene of course... I'm not sure all docs will prescribe it - but it certainly works.
Don't worry folks - this too will pass (pardon the pun:-). Honest!

I've had two bands in the last three weeks. One on each of two visits. The doctor would only do one at a time. On the first one, I felt a very strong pinch and then some minor pain. The pain dissipated on my drive home and I had no further discomfort from the band. Bowel movements were a challenge the first day or so, but no problem after that. No bleeding the first day, but quite a bit the second day, but still no pain. The bleeding ended by the end of day two. The doctor recommended Citracel as a way to soften the stools. It took two days for it to start having any effect.
i had the second band a little over a week ago. This one did hurt more than the first because the doctor 'trapped' two with the one band. This one was sore for most of the day but then no pain. I had no bleeding until the 4th day when I thought I was going to need a transfusion, but the bleeding did stop by the end of the day. Bowel movements haven't been a problem, I think due to the continued use of the citracel.
I have a followup next week and if another is needed, he'll do it. Based on reading the posts from 4, 5, 6 years ago, it sounds like a lot of doctors have learned a few things since the procedure started.

I had one banded today. I have 3 med-large he said. He only does one a month. I definitely felt the urge to go sit on the bowl. But other than that.....I really feel nothing. I must say that I wish I didn't read any of these posts! Suddenly I'm a little nervous if this is going to work or not! I'll let yo know....

I'm feeling the same way. This was my second banding. First one, I was fine - no bloating and feeling great. But this one, I'm worried something is wrong. Have you gotten relief and, if so, how soon after.

Hi Sarah
I am due to have the litigation procedure done next month and am very scared. Hence I have been reading up about it on the internet, to try and find out what might help , and found your post.
What are you are suggesting is very interesting, but I have a couple of questions if you dont mind.
Silly one- but how do you apply the topical stuff internally? I imagine things will be a little sore down there, and cannot imagine how this would be overcome!!
Second question - I have read alot about Butchers broom and Horse Chestnut being helpful in the treatment of haemarroids, not least because they both act to strengthen the blood vessels. I know this sounds daft, but does strengthening the blood vessels after this procedure help or could it hinder? i wouldn't wish to delay the "dropping off" time!!
Thanks sarah - your replies will be most appreciated!!

I had one hemorrhoid banded yesterday and it wasn't a big deal at all. It probably took 30 seconds and there wasn't any anesthetic of any sort, neither local nor general. It was no more uncomfortable than a prostate exam. I got up and walked out to the car and could sort of feel something but it wasn't what I would call pain. Only 1/2 on a scale of ten. I drove around alot after that running some errands. By the time I got home three hours later I couldn't feel anything different. What little discomfort there was went away. This morning I felt perfectly fine. Had a normal bowel movement. There's still a trace of blood. Bleeding was the reason I had the banding done. The doctor said to come back in a month and he would do one more banding. He says he only does one at a time to minimize discomfort. If this is all there is to it I'm kickin' myself for putting off getting them fixed until now. This colo/rectal doctor I went to says he's done thousands of these bandings.

i had my banding done this morning , as soon as the band was on my first one i was in excrusiating pain !!!!! the DR told me to rest when i got home and the pain would last a couple of days . i couldnt walk properly through the pain and cryed all the way home . The doctor offered no pain relief only advised me to go to my GP if the pain was too unbarible for pain killers . Not happy with the hospital at all , they literally did it and sent me on my way ,no rest period , i was dizzy felt faint and sick . the receptionist gave me tissues and cared for me untill my taxi came . i had a missed call from the hospital when i returned home . I assume the receptionist told the surgeon of my upset and pain . I just cannot wait for the pain and aching to go . i compare it to contractions during childbirth and severe stinging when u open ur bowels . if u have piles and had a baby you will totally agree ! So i lay here in my bed my partner made for me on the sofa dosed up on neurofen in lots of pain . Dreading bedtime and dreading my first movement . haveing soup for my tea

That was my experience. I've had this procedure done 3 times, and only one time did I have anything that I would call "discomfort." That was just a dull ache right after the procedure that went away by the next day. I agree with you, the most uncomfortable part was the actual procedure; comparing it to a prostate exam is the perfect way to describe the discomfort.
