I stopped taking dilaudid, 8-16 mg every 6-8 hours on May 18... Now it is June 3 and I still feel terrible, almost worse than the first week with nausea, diarrhea, body aches, etc. Is this normal and if so, how long will it last? Thanks!!

How are you now? My husband weaned from 20mg a day to 6mg a day then stopped cold turkey 4 days ago. His stomach pain is severe and burning and his feet also burn. The stomach pain moved into his chest for a while. He got on the dilaudid for pancreatitis, but his scans look better so they want him off it. The doctors seem to be just guessing.

you should always taper to allow your body time to wean away from the side effects of it. slowly go down on mg. then, take 12, 24, 48 hours later. Epsom salt baths every few hours, and valium, sleeping pills will help with the feelings of desperation, burning muscles and restlessness. Cold Turkey will be painful.

I've been on 4mg hydromorphone for 10mon. Quit cold turky two days ago. Am going thru hell!!! Withevery symptom to the extreme! Think I wil revisit Dr to get some more dilliys and develop a detox plan with him. Thro some chlonidine in as well. Start on 8mg dose once/day for four days. Then cut back to 6mg for four day. Thet 4mg for four days. Theh 3mg for day. Then 21/2mg four day. Then 2mg four days. 11/2 four days. 1four days. 1/2 four days. Off completely. I fully expect some withdrawl but not painfully severe from rhe cold turkey!

Saw Dr today. He told me not to go cold turkey off opiates of this sort, especially after long term use. Put me on a weaning program which requires 16mg/day for a week, then drop to 12mg for one day, then back to 16mg the next day and alternate like this for a week. Then drop to 12mg/day for a week, then drop to 8mg for one day an then back to 12mg the next day and alternate like this for a week. Then drop to 8mg/day for a week. Then down to 4mg for a day then alternate back and forth to 8mg every other day for a week. Then stay at 4mg/day for a week. Then drop to 2mg for a day and alternate back n forth to 4mg for a week. Then stay at 2mg/day for a week, then drop to 1mg for a day and alternate back n forth to 2mg for a week. Then stay at 1mg/day for a week. Then drop to 1/2mg for a day and alternate to 1mg every other day for a week. Then stay at 1/2mg/day for a week. Then start skipping every other day for a week. Then, if necessary, skip 2 days between 1/2mg dose. Then throw remaining pills in the garbage!

Just curious how Long did take after u posted your question, because after my bilaterl knee surgery I stopped taking the dilauded on August 7. & my surgery was June 28, I'm so nauseous with no relief,

I weened off 4mg 6xs a day after 1 1/2 years for chronic pain did it cold turkey first week was a living nightmare it's week 4 now and still a bit of weakness in my whole body and diarrhea once a day other then that I'm fine don't go cold turkey ween off it with a doctors help
